To drink three bottles of wine a week?

Just that. What do you drink?

OP posts:
Harebel · 02/06/2019 12:13

I think you know it's too much OP.

It can be a slippery slope from 3 bottles a week to one every other day then it can slip into every day.

You have an alcoholic parent. You know this.

Try to replace your wine "treat" with something else, cut back a little. Look after yourself Thanks

JacquesHammer · 02/06/2019 12:20

What do you drink?

Normally no alcohol. Might sometimes drink once in a blue moon if I fancy something or I’m out for a meal.

I usually take two nights to drink one of the mini bottles of wine Grin

InABigCountry · 02/06/2019 12:20

I think 3 bottles a week sounds a lot but other people won't. I also was using it as a "reward" after a busy stressful shift as a nurse but working two 12 hour shifts a week felt I had more "time" to drink.

I have cut down on wine as I hate the hangover fuzzy head and tiredness the next day. Also the amount of calories in wine is shocking!

I have started buying those pre mixed cans of gin and slimline tonic or mojito.most of them only have about 1 unit alcohol per can, I put lots of ice in but still feel I have had a "drink" but don't have the hangover the next day. It's interesting as I would never buy a bottle of spirits to sit and drink in the house but would regularly buy bottles of wine. I love wine but think it is now acceptable to sit in the house drinking wine, especially if you can't get out because of young kids.

OP are you able to function normally on the weekends you are drinking? I don't go out very often but I sometimes feel I need a drink to relax in company but if I drink too much I get sick. After ending a girls night out being sick in the toilets and having to be taken home, I feel at the age of nearly 50 I'm just too old for this!! Happy to say I haven't been sick in 8 months, it's just not worth it and too embarrassing!

Isthisafreename · 02/06/2019 12:23

@managedmis - It's fine.

No it's not fine. It's at least double the recommended maximum for women.

Amazonfromkent · 02/06/2019 12:27

Wow, just wow. Really? B.s. most women I know and work with and see socially drink twice that if not more.

Isthisafreename · 02/06/2019 12:30

@Amazonfromkent - Wow, just wow. Really? B.s. most women I know and work with and see socially drink twice that if not more.

That doesn't make it fine.

YesQueen · 02/06/2019 12:35

Weekly - nothing usually
Sometimes I'll go to the pub and have a couple of gins or wines, and more occasionally I'll go out clubbing and drink a weeks allowance in a night

Arnoldthecat · 02/06/2019 12:35

Get a perspex measuring jug and measure out pub measures of wine as a guage and to temper consumption. Get the smaller one for the G and Ts.

LoubyLou1234 · 02/06/2019 12:36

I can't handle alcohol as I grow older. A couple of glasses of wine is enough for me. Once or twice at weekends, even then I feel it then next day, not hangover but just tired as it affects my sleep and function. I like alcohol so I just minimise it now. Plus I'm trying to live healthier and it's just empty calories and sugar!

However each to their own it is above official recommendations but everyone is an adult and able to make their own decisions what they put into their bodies.

If it does affect you the day after maybe a cut back?

lovemeorleaveme · 02/06/2019 12:39

I don't drink anything most weeks, occasionally a cider...

JaceLancs · 02/06/2019 12:48

I could easily put away a couple of bottles of spirits a week as I just love the taste etc
I don’t though! I’d be worried about being over the limit in a morning
I try and restrict my drinking to Friday and Saturday night unless I’ve got a meal out or something on socially during the week
Doing SW has helped as I now measure properly rather than free pour - can’t say I always stay in my syn limits - but it averages out ok over a week
I’ve lost over 5 stone so far

UndertheCedartree · 02/06/2019 12:54

That is a lot and if you're mainly drinking it at the weekend it would be binge drinking which is meant to be really bad for you.

Personally, I only drink a glass of wine or 2 a couple of times a month. But that's because too much alcohol makes me depressed so it is part of looking after my mental health.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 02/06/2019 12:57

I was a regular 3-4 (sometimes more) bottles of wine a week drinker. Normally when cooking a meal, winding down after work, dealing with stress etc. I realised it was making my anxiety worse, I felt foggy and sluggish, and it was stupidly expensive.

I cut out all alcohol two months ago. I was becoming dependent on it, and I just couldn't justify the cost or calorific intake. I think I became allergic to it, I'd start to feel dizzy and sick after one glass. I might have some in future, but for now I'm quite happy not drinking.

Mamabear12 · 02/06/2019 13:02

I used to have this habit, but more like 2 bottles a week. I also used wine to wind down. Now I am pregnant, stopped drinking immediately. I now drink ice water with lemon to wind down :) I would definitely try to cut down to just two bottles of wine.

Silene · 02/06/2019 13:19

I love a glass of red wine with a meal, or prosecco for a treat...but hardly ever, because I get horrendous rosacea, which flares within minutes. My mil used to say I could never be a secret drinker!!

EllenRachel · 02/06/2019 13:28

I drink about 2 bottles a week. Sometimes more and sometimes less. I now my units to keep an eye on it. I also have two weeks a month (weekdays only) when I drink water only (and no wine/coke/squash/tea).

I had no problem at all stopping when I was pregnant.

agnurse · 02/06/2019 13:37

The big risk is to your liver. I have seen people die of liver failure, from liver cancer primarily, but I've also seen people with liver and brain problems from chronic alcoholism.

It ain't pretty, I can say that much.

Jemineye · 02/06/2019 13:45

I was merrily having a G&T/glass of wine or two a night along with DH for ever, both muttering occasionally that we should probably cut down but not actually doing anything it.

New Year came along and an extended family member had a serious health scare which prompted DH into a health drive. This coincided with my body obviously objecting to my drinking with the most horrible acid relfux waking me up in the night needing antacids, worrying about what damage that was doung to my insides.

We both decided to just quit from then on and aside from hubby having just a couple of nights where he's had a wee dram. Nothing, nadder. The reflux stopped immediately. Quite proud of myself for just listening to my body and doing what I needed to do for so long! I haven't condemned myself to a lifetime of sobriety, but I've feel so much damn better now. Just my little story...

Littleduckeggblue · 02/06/2019 13:46

3 bottles of wine a week IMO is an alcoholic.

Longlostperson · 02/06/2019 13:50

I Very rarely drink. Maybe a glass of wine with the right meal now and again.
3 bottles is going to give you health problems for sure. But it’s your life.

Emmabryant123 · 02/06/2019 13:54

0 here
I have a alcoholic drinks about twice a year

That's a hell of a lot imo

SystolicSyster · 02/06/2019 13:59

I drank about two bottles a week, but have stopped completely about a month ago, because I'm having health issues, and thought I might as well. I thought I'd miss it, but so far haven't.

SmarmyMrMime · 02/06/2019 14:21

I'm not teatotal, but I wouldn't bother doing something like Dry January or Stoptober as I can easily go a month without thinking about it. I think I last had a can of G&T a fortnight ago and can't remember how many weeks before that. More around Christmas or BBQ season when there's a flurry of birthdays.

I always was a lightweight and could get drunk cheaply. I was still in my 20s when I began to be put off by the digestive effects after. These days, cheaper wines make me feel like I'm hungover before I've finished a second glass. Quality matters a lot.

I wouldn't want the after effects of drinking alcohol to be a regular feature of my life. It's difficult to judge what it is doing to your body as it can suddenly catch up on you even if you are drinking "normally" compared to your peers. The other worry about a big drinking session is knowing when it is safely out of you before driving the next day. Men tend to get caught drink driving at night, women tend to get caught the morning after.

Isthisafreename · 02/06/2019 14:26

@Littleduckeggblue - 3 bottles of wine a week IMO is an alcoholic.

Volume of drink does not mean someone is an alcoholic. 3 bottles is too much from a health perspective but that doesn't mean the op is an alcoholic.

Eliza9919 · 02/06/2019 14:31

Meh, I used to drink three bottles a night.

And then start on the vodka.
