That wedding with the ban on Champions League final?

A few weeks´ago there was a thread about a wedding where the bride and groom had banned the final this evening. I wonder what has been going on there tonight? Did everyone leave the reception at 8pm? Did the B&G give in to the inevitable and put up a TV?

Just marking my spot in case the other thread's OP comes back to let us know how it went Wink

I'll never understand the obsession with a sport where hardly anyone ever scores.

There was 1,018 goals in the Premier League this season, an average of 2.68 each game. I'd imagine the Champions League would be similar, but I can't put my finger on that stat... there are goals if you're watching the right games!

that tiresome international men's football competition GrinGrinGrinGrin

ReanimatedSGB has a load of frequently recycled phrases she rolls out to express her disdain for football. Grin

As it turns out this game was pretty disappointing for the neutral but it will have been wonderful for committed Liverpool supporters. If the bride and groom had any sense they'll have set up a TV somewhere. It didn't even kick off until 8pm anyway.

Next year's CL final is on 30th May if anyone wants to plan ahead.

Being relatively low-scoring makes it more exciting. It adds to the tension and means that there's a huge rush of celebration when your team scores. I often find it edge-of-your-seat, which suddenly bursts into joy or dispair (and maybe back again).

I find higher-scoring sports, like basketball, really dull. Someone scoring every minute takes the excitement out of it.

@MitziK That sounds like the wedding from hell. I know this is off-topic and I try not to be judgmental, but I’ll never understand how people can attend and support a wedding where they know one partner is cheating on the other without the innocent party knowing and the innocent one is entering the marriage “blind.” I don’t know how your brother’s friend making the “Randy Mandy” joke, and all those who laughed at it, didn’t feel guilty as fuuuuuck. And poor you having to hear that at 14 about your brother! Almost makes whether or not one has football at the wedding seem a non-issue, in comparison.

One of her stock phrases for most situations is whinyarse, which is ironic considering that's what she is every time she posts about football.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/06/2019 03:44
Grin The banging on about mens football is exceedingly childish.
BabyDueDecember2019 · 02/06/2019 06:16

I was also thinking about this yesterday!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 02/06/2019 06:53

I would have allowed it to be watched but it is beyond pathetic when people let the result ruin their moods and get into a strop if their team loses. I would be concerned that would happen and it would impact the atmosphere for the rest of the day.

MindyStClaire · 02/06/2019 07:19

I imagine she's just challenging the default male. Why does women's football have to be "women's football", but men's gets to be just "football" without the qualifier? And how many sports (or professions) are the opposite?

Teehee.. I was telling my son about the thread as he is a Liverpool supporter and I was thinking about if she went to the wedding and what happened, so it would be great to have an update but I’m sure the wedding guests were in fine spirits given Liverpool won.

ReanimatedSGB · 02/06/2019 09:00

OK, just imagine for a minute if a percentage of wedding guests (or birthday party guests or whatever) wanted to watch a women's football match and were asking for a TV to be provided... Sure, some hosts would be laidback about it, just like some hosts are laidback about other 'important' sporting events. But if they weren't, I somehow can't see them being bullied all round to make it 'part of the day' in the same way that people are expected to defer to men's football matches.

ReanimatedSGB · 02/06/2019 09:02

What is deeply mundane is the assumption that all the guests will care more about a men's football match than the party they are attending. there are quite a lot of people who really don't give a toss about men's football, and if half or more of the guests are in that camp, why should they and the hosts have to put up with the event being hijacked by a group of people bellowing at a television screen and probably sulking and moaning for the rest of the event if theiir side loses?

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/06/2019 09:07

Reanimated is absolutely spot on. Ridiculous deference is given to football as is largely considered a male interest. Anything perceived to be mainly women’s interest is scorned and belittled.

Just leaving it here for future b&g
Saturday, 30 May
2020 UEFA Champions League Fina
Saturday, 29 May
2021 UEFA Champions League Final

If you don’t want to be telling people what they can or can’t do ..: then I’d avoid those dates.

Nice job! They probably would want to avoid the Euro 2020 semi-final and finals as well:
Semi-finals
7 July 2020
21:00 (20:00 UTC+1)
8 July 2020
21:00 (20:00 UTC+1)
Final
12 July 2020

No updates because it never happened, it was clickbait Wink

Provincialbelle · 02/06/2019 16:56

Fun click bait all the same jf it was.

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/06/2019 17:00

My DH would rather watch women's football than last night's match.

The 'live' coverage on YouTube was 2 minutes in arrears. So I coped with radio commentary.

If you cannot check when a major event is on, just look at Ryanair prices for nearby, as they will have been increased.
