To think this is not/should not be normal?

I recently popped in one of the local (kind of, we have no shops really close by) shops. They have a deli counter with hams and cheeses, and a meat/butcher counter. They are in separate fridges, but usually manned by one person as it's not very busy.

I was hoping to buy some nice cheese. There was one guy in front of me in the queue. He was buying some (raw) chicken and pork chops and then some cheese and hams. The lady at the counter first grabbed and packed the chicken and pork, and then, with the same gloves, went to slice some of the ham and cheese. Is it just me, or is it not very food safety minded/hygenic? I woud have thought they should be changing gloves if not after each handling, then at least have separate gloves for raw stuff and cooked meats?
I popped in again today for something else and I saw them doing the same thing again- everything, raw and cold meats and cheese, handled and wrapped in the same pair of gloves.

Report. They could make people very ill.

floraloctopus · 01/06/2019 21:45

I would stop shopping there and consider speaking to the person in charge/environmental health.

Seeingadistance · 01/06/2019 21:56

You can report it to your local council and ask for a food hygiene inspection. Preferably before someone dies. There was a similar case in Lanarkshire some years ago where several pensioners at a party became ill and one died, after the butcher supplying the meat did exactly this.

Bad enough if one person dies, but in the Lanarkshire case, TWENTY ONE people died.

OP, you must report this to your local environmental health service as a matter of urgency.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 01/06/2019 22:09

Gads, I would be reporting that.

Not quite as bad but the staff in the canteen at my office wear the same pair of gloves to handle money as they do to handle the food and it always grosses me out.

Aberforthsgoat · 01/06/2019 22:11

can you name and shame?! (Not sure if the legalities of this but I certainly don’t want to unwittingly order anything from there)

Think I might just stay away from the deli counters!

ViolentBrutishAndShort · 02/06/2019 07:19

This is a lot more common than people think. I only buy pre wrapped for this reason. I had a dose of salmonella that nearly killed me when I was in my twenties. I am hyper aware of what I eat now : (

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 02/06/2019 07:49

@TheInvestigator to be honest I was so shocked and thinking what I can buy from the raw counter (wanted hams, but no way I would have got any after them being touched with porky gloves), plus I am not a very vocal person.
@ISmellBabies No utensils, just gloves. Also they have some savoury pastries on the counter they handle with the same gloves.

I have never seen the manager of the store, used to frequent the place ages ago once or twice a week and I only saw the same two/three shop assitants. The manager popped in once around Christmas, so not sure how to reach him.

OP, use the link MereDintofPandiculation posted for you, and report the shop. Never mind talking to the manager.

isabellerossignol · 02/06/2019 08:25

Totally against all health and hygiene regulations

When I read this I thought you meant you were against health and hygiene regulations existing and I was Shock. Then I read it again and the penny dropped Blush

Yes OP. Report. Don't ask to speak to the manager, it's pointless.

rainbowstardrops · 02/06/2019 08:45

I'd report this as they clearly don't understand food safety or they just can't be bothered to do things properly.
I'd be thinking if they can do this in front of customers then what might be going on that you don't see.
Report them before someone gets really ill.

LizzieSiddal · 02/06/2019 08:50

Don’t bother going to the manager, you need to report to your council. They will go out and see what’s going on, offer them advice on serving food safely.

This is really serious, people can get very ill from this kind of cross contamination.

Babdoc · 02/06/2019 09:23

Thanks, Seeingatadistance, you’re right about the death toll in Wishaw. I remembered the initial news report as 20 or so cases of E Coli with one death, but it was actually 20 deaths by the end. Horrific. And all the more reason for OP to report it to her local council immediately!

Catren · 02/06/2019 09:23

Isabelle that's what I was thinking too! 😬

BlueMerchant · 02/06/2019 09:28

Urgh and very dangerous. Definitely report to council.
Different but I stopped going to our local asda as on the create your own pizzas all the veg and cheese we're handled with same gloves as the meat toppings.

RosemarysBush · 02/06/2019 09:30

😱This is NOT normal or safe at all. You must report them. You don’t have to give your name, just ring the council and ask for environmental health department.

CombineBananaFister · 02/06/2019 09:32

Yanbu. They clearly haven't grasped the concept of cross contamination or why they actually are wearing gloves. I've seen this in a couple of places where the 'glove wearing' seems to 'absolve' all food hygiene/allergens issues and it's plain dangerous. Definitely need some training before someone gets very ill

Footle · 04/06/2019 14:44

So did you report it?
