To ask for tips on how to get dd to take her antibiotics

Dd (3.10) has had a raging temperature for over a week after her pre school jabs. Finally found out she also has a urine infection. Got some antibiotics. She had one dose last night but now she knows what it tastes like she wont take anymore. I mixed it with yogurt this morning and she ate most of it. Now she wont eat another yogurt because it tastes funny.
Bribery with chocolate doesn't work. She only needs to have another 3 or 4 doses but I'm at a loss now.
Any tips?

Maybe mix it in some orange juice?

BlueMerchant · 01/06/2019 20:08

My DD holds her nose while I squirt it out of the syringe. We have a cup of the fizzy red drink (she is usually not allowed to drink) on hand to wash it down.Blush

Spanneroo · 01/06/2019 20:10

Orange juice works brilliantly. Any strong-flavoured liquid really (could resort to fruit shoot/coke/something as a last resort

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/06/2019 20:11

Mixed with chocolate syrup? You take a spoonful of (unmedicated!) choc syrup in front of her, then offer her the one with meds mixed in.

iknowenoughthankyouygritte · 01/06/2019 20:12

Bribery favourite treat in return for taking it.
Failing that you just have to be really tough and force the issue.

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 01/06/2019 20:13

Second chocolate syrup, seemed to be the sweetest thing to counteract the bitterness of the antibiotics.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/06/2019 20:14

In the past we have used the following:-

Yoghurt
Weetabix with sugar on
Scrambled egg with ketchup
Orange juice
Milkshake with ice cream
Ice cream
Sandwich spread
Chocolate spread
Porridge with fruit
Mashed potato

scaredofthecity · 01/06/2019 20:14

We let my DS wash it down with a glass of nesquik. He loves chocolate milk and he could wash the taste away quickly.

I thought he was being difficult until I tried it... vile stuff, not how I remember antibiotics at all.

Hearthside · 01/06/2019 20:16

I would try the syringe method followed by a drink afterwards. If that doesn't work it's a case of being cruel to be kind and just give it .Hard i know but if it's the only way .

orangeshoebox · 01/06/2019 20:16

making fun of it, saying ooooh this is so bitter I absolutely must have a spoon of mustard to help the taste'
worked for my dc that age.
that and bribes (not mustard Smile)

dontticklethetoad · 01/06/2019 20:16

I put it in nearly neat strawberry ribena. It worked, but it took months to wean her off it (the ribena).

dontticklethetoad · 01/06/2019 20:19

There will be someone on here in a minute who will say you absolutely should not mix amoxicillin with anything (I'm assuming that's what it is), but a GP friend said if it means it goes in, just do it.
After 6 weeks of impetigo, I was willing to try anything.

bobstersmum · 01/06/2019 20:19

One of mine has a lot of antibiotics due to tonsils and although he hates them he knows they help. We always have a nice tasting drink ready and he washes it straight down.

Halo84 · 01/06/2019 20:20

We just forced a syringe of medicine, followed by a drink they liked. It was never pleasant or easy, but it worked.

HeavenKnowsImMiserableCow · 01/06/2019 20:21

My boy has to have the white grainy one that tastes of nail varnish remover it’s vile. The doctor told me to do this, put the dose in a little bowl and and add neat cordial in, mix it together then syringe that up. Then put a little bowl of jelly tots out a a a reward for swallowing. Works well . Scrub the teeth at night though.

HeyAssbutt · 01/06/2019 20:23

Thank you everyone. I tried forcing her to have it but she make herself gag and then throws up. She did it the other night when I gave her off brand nurofen.
I'll have to try a sweet drink I think. Shes not got much of an appetite at the moment so she wont finish anything.

I saw a photo online that was a juice carton where one side had been cut off and the juice poured out. Replaced inside with a tiny cup with antibiotics in mixed with the juice.
Straw in the top of the juice carton as normal, only show the kid the side that's intact and they apparently don't notice the difference as they're not looking for it. Maybe worth a try!

AbsolCatly · 01/06/2019 20:30

Jam worked for DD - nothing else did, equal amount to the medicine. She went from retching when she saw the bottle to asking for it almost over night

Diamondbean · 01/06/2019 20:33

Fruit shoot bottle, either mix it in the last bit of the drink or put strong black currant squash in there and give it a shake.
It’s the only way we can get our 2 year old to take any medicine at all!

delilabell · 01/06/2019 20:35

Can it be taken at the same time as Calpol? We made unicorn medicine for dd that was Calpol and antihistamine so it looked shimmery. Medicine in the string first then Calpol so it's at the top/first hit to go in

MsVestibule · 01/06/2019 20:48

We mixed it with a large teaspoon of strawberry jam. It worked a treat.

Rememberallball · 02/06/2019 21:24

Ice lolly first to numb the taste buds and hopefully she’ll swallow the medicine before finishing the lolly!!
