To Wish I'd Never Asked

DH found a set of keys near our house today. The road (but not house number) was attached to them.

I posted on our local FB page that we'd got these keys and asked the owner to PM me.

Jeez. I got answers ranging from "take them back yourself" (how, as I didn't know the full address) and "the owner may not have FB so will never know you've got them" and "give them to the village shopkeeper and the owner can ask in there.)

I wish I hadn't bothered if I'm honest.

Sometimes it feels like no good deed goes unpunished. Community Facebook groups are just awful IME.

I got home to find a wallet containing 100 quid missing...gutted! A huge amount of dosh to me...retraced my steps....nope.

Also had loads of credit cards /identity cards yada yada..was just about to start cancelling cards when I thought id ring local police station...in the days that they were still open...oh yes John has collected it and taken it to his caravan on the fair ground ...he's waiting for you to call! I'd dropped it getting out of the car.

John -the traveller -was very decent and stayed in once the cops had told him I'd be over to see him asap.
We gave them some wine and chocs...

Wallet was stuffed full of cash...a bit muddy but fine!

did end up taking the keys to the local shop where the owner berated me for not bringing them to him sooner, as the owners had been in asking for the fucking keys.

So there was another option. Even if you can’t bring it to a police station, you can log something as being found, or the local shop is a good option too. I think the point being made was, not everyone is on social media.

Ah, the infamous “log it” myth.

Jemima232 · 02/06/2019 18:14

I think I'll just throw things away in future.

Save all the hassle.

Haha in my town the shop shuts at 2pm on a Sunday , there is no police station or banks. So if I found something I'd put it on the fb page.

I always have an image of police stations in the UK with a desk piled high with old style ledgers to "log" lost keys, dodgy people hanging around, someone shouting in the street, people looking at you strangely and on and on and on.....

EleanorReally · 02/06/2019 23:35

I think local facebook is the new police
lost dogs/people/keys/wallets

suspicious white vans.

And not everyone would assume something they’d lost would be handed in at the local shop.

It’s attitudes like yours that make people like the OP think it isn’t worth the hassle of trying to get an item back to its owner. There are some bizarre comments on this thread. ‘Trek across town to the police station’. ‘Leave it where it is just in case I retrace my steps’. ‘A woman handed my son’s school bag into the school and he got it back - how dare she distress him like that!’

I wonder if any of the people bitching on the OP’s local FB page have stopped to think for a second that maybe the person who lost the keys should have been a bit more careful in the first place? Has this person thanked the OP for saving them the cost and hassle of getting a new set cut (or even having the locks changed in the worst case scenario)?

Jemima232 · 03/06/2019 19:39

The local FB page seems to be policed by three people who designate themselves as "in charge" of our village.
