I booked a specific seat on a train. I don’t mind where I sit really but don’t want to stand. I got on the train, it’s really busy with people standing. The person that was in my seat is a child (11-13 ish) I asked her to move (very nicely) but then looked around and spotted one other empty seat further down the carriage. I said I’d sit there but when I went to the seat it was next to a man who is very dirty and smells. I came back to my booked seat, the child’s mother gave the child her seat and I’m sat in my booked seat. WIBU? I feel a bit awkward.

Ywnbu if they wanted seats they didn't have to get out of, they should have booked.

Perso25 · 01/06/2019 12:52

Don't feel awkward it is your seat.

Yanbu, And i would’ve made the teen stand if they were mine.

Bodear · 01/06/2019 13:06

The mum went to sit down next to the dirty guy. Shame she’s not parenting her two youngest though. So loud!

You booked a specific seat - if they needed 2 seats, they should have booked.

The dad’s Not here btw, I’m not just assuming it’s the mum’s job.

Although that’s probably a bit rich given she’s now sat at the other end of the carriage because of me!

Yes. Yes it is. You got your way, so probably best not be judging the mum who is now sitting far away from her children.

Perhaps there weren’t seats together available. Perhaps she had to buy the tickets last minute and booking a seat wasn’t an option. It doesn’t cost money to do, so I’m sure if she could have, she would have.

I’m surprised there wasn’t another free single seat anywhere else in the train.

It’s not about that though, is it? The OP booked a seat and therefore she has a right to use it. It isn’t her fault that the family didn’t or couldn’t, etc?!

Bodear · 01/06/2019 13:33

@Yabbers yes I agree I shouldn’t judge her for that - although it is the quiet coach so probably not ideal for small children anyway. I didn’t look along the whole train, only this carriage.

Why would you go and search the train for a vacant seat when you’d taken the trouble to reserve one?

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/06/2019 13:41

You were kind to even look for another seat. On trains where seats can be reserved you have the right to sit in your reserved seat. Other people can also reserve seats if they want them.

drinkygin · 01/06/2019 14:07

You could have sat in another seat, only for another passenger to board the train at the next stop and for you to be in THEIR reserved seat. You were totally within your rights to ask her to move.

Thanks all

Maybe the youngest is five or younger so could travel free and sit in an available seat only (so mum would have had to pay to guarantee them a seat and chose to risk it). Either way, YANBU
