To wonder how to use this washing line?

Am I being a bit dim? I've inherited this line (set into the ground) at my house and I've never had a post like this before. It's just the lone one! And there's no actual line attached. What do I do with it?! How do I tie the rope and what do I tie it to?! I am a bit mystified... should there be another post???

Is is definitely a washing line?

FannyFeatures · 01/06/2019 00:52

Hmm, we had a line like that when i was growing up but there were 4 posts so the line would tie around in a square.

Not really sure what you'd do with 1 unless it was tied into the fence or something?

PookieDo · 01/06/2019 00:52

That looks to me like it’s just the cross post so you wrap it around and then it goes in 2 directions.. like 2 sides of triangle
So you would need hooks on fence posts maybe
But be careful check they are secure or it will pull the fence down

TurboTeddy · 01/06/2019 00:53

Looks like you need a washing line to attach to the post. You will need another post to attach the other end of the line to (obviously Grin). If there isn't one at the moment then I don't know how the previous owners used it. Is there a hook or bracket on a wall or fence somewhere that might have been used instead of a second post. Otherwise I would think they inherited it but never used it.

That's a 'greeny pole'

There should be at least one more, they often come in 2/3/4 set ups. You tie the washing line between the poles to hang your washing on.

I have one the same - there's a hook on the outside wall of my house. The line loops through the hook, the line runs down the garden then I loop it up over and around the sticky out bits on the pole. Finally I tie it off a few times. Mines iron and will probably be standing longer than my house 😁

Nat6999 · 01/06/2019 01:00

There is normally a hook on the outside of the house to attach the ring or loop at the beginning of the washing line, then you run the line to the nearest post to the house, wrap it round a few times between the pegs, then to the next post, make sure you pull the line tight as they stretch. At the final post, tie a knot in the line & wrap any excess line round the top of the post so if the line ever breaks you have enough to rearrange it.

Maybe they had a reel and they took it with them, the reel fixes to a nearby wall (the lines are about 15m long) then the eye on the end of the line slips over one of the pegs that stick out the top of the pole.

It’s one am and I’m googling photos of greeny poles. Cheers for that. Bloody internet 😂
