To worry about DS and his temperature?

DS (5yo) has had a cough for about 4 weeks, unfortunately he also started with a cold three days ago and has had a temperature since then. He was checked at the drs yesterday and chest clear so Dr just said it's the cold giving him a temperature (ranges from 37.6 to 38.1).

AIBU to start panicking about the temperature? How long do I leave it until going back to the Dr? He is generally well other than less of an appetite and low energy/tiring easily.

That’s only a low level fever so I can’t say it would worry me especially as he has been checked over already

Would you medicate for a low level fever?

If he's eating, drinking and weeing then a temp that low would not cause me any concern and I would only give calpol if he was distressed.

BumandChips · 31/05/2019 16:16

I would only give calpol or nurofen if he appeared miserable or in pain, otherwise I would just leave the fever alone.

babysharkah · 31/05/2019 16:26

I really wouldn't worry about a temperature at that level

bloodywhitecat · 31/05/2019 16:29

No I wouldn't medicate a fever alone, fever is the body's way of killing the germ that is making poorly. I believe today's advice is not to treat a fever alone but if he has earache/headache/sore throat or any pain alongside the fever then treat that with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

BettysLeftTentacle · 31/05/2019 16:32

That’s a very low fever. I only generally medicate when the fever reaches around 39 and/or they’re miserable or in pain.

witchy89 · 31/05/2019 16:33

It's a quick spike in temperature that you need to watch out for. If they're well in themselves then no need to medicate. A fever is the bodies way of fighting off infection!

ASnowballsChance · 31/05/2019 16:33

He has a cold and said he feels wobbly, don't know if that's enough to warrant medicating.

Anything above 38 is a fever so he has a low fever. If it gets to near 39 then I'd give calpol etc. A fever needs to last five days before going to the doctors.

SoyDora · 31/05/2019 16:38

A low level fever in conjunction with a cold for 3 days wouldn’t bother me at all, no. It would be completely typical of a cold.

MustardScreams · 31/05/2019 16:40

Wobbly isn’t pain so no I wouldn’t be medicating. I very rarely give dd calpol or similar unless she’s in actual pain. A fever is the body’s way of killing the bugs, bringing it down just hinders the process.

Lots of rest and fluids for him and he’ll be fine.

BumandChips · 31/05/2019 16:41

It’s not unusual to have a temperature with a cold. There’s nothing a GP can do about it, and it’s only a mild temp.

BlackInk · 31/05/2019 16:58

I agree, if he's not too poorly in himself and not in pain I wouldn't medicate for a fever under 39 (unless we perhaps had to leave the house). Our GP said that they like to see children if a fever persists for more than 4 or 5 days.

That's a long time to have a cough though. If it doesn't resolve when they cold gets better I would maybe take him back to the GP.
