Tomorrow I am taking my 9 yr old son to the imperial war museum and then we have the rest of the day to do what we’d like... was thinking a walk by the river/Southbank and he wants to go to HamleysGrin but would love to hear your top suggestions

My kids love to get the DLR to Greenwich. If you get on at Bank you can normally bag the front seats where they can pretend to drive the train. Boat ride back along the Thames to Westminster.

I think Comicon this year was the thing DD has loved the most so far. We go to London quite often and we've done most things now - all the museums and galaries, Madam Tussauds, Covent Garden, Camden, London Eye, Portobello Road, Buckingham Palace, Winter Wonderland, most of the parks and shops. We just go for special events or conventions now.

FieryBiscuits14 · 31/05/2019 22:59

Sky Garden is brilliant

Centre of the Cell in Whitechapel, East London

Actually scratch mine. I forgot you have to book weeks in advance. Well worth a visit though. And it's free.

Hiring recumbent bikes in Battersea park
Afternoon tea at One Aldwych (Charlie and Chocolate factory one)
Camden Market
Fountains at granary square in summer

We've just discovered these treasure trails which are a fun way of discovering and exploring different areas

Another vote for Diana Memorial playground while he is still young enough to enjoy it. Free, well looked after and hopefully given the weather the splash park bit will be in operation.

Or get yourself a Today Tix app, or Stagedoor etc and get some cheap last min tix to Aladdin before it closes, or Wicked.

bugeyedbarber · 31/05/2019 23:39

Science museum is amazing.
As is London Transport Museum.

For a hidden gem (bit pricey though) check out the Postal Museum. You can book a ride on the newly recurved underground mini railway. You can sort letters, wear the costumes, make phone calls and your own stamps. It's fantastic.

SweetMarmalade · 31/05/2019 23:40

@WatchingTheWheels85 they’re adorable aren’t they! That’s all Ds wanted to do, we loved every minute though.

SweetMarmalade · 31/05/2019 23:43

The Diana memorial playground is lovely, although the fountain area is through Hyde Park though and across the road, you can swim in the Serpentine if the weather’s nice.

mabelisable · 31/05/2019 23:45

Apologies if this has already been mentioned as I haven't rtft but both my ds's enjoyed the Tower Bridge experience. You can walk across and see the river below through a glass section in the floor.
Also, just a walk along the South Bank will give you plenty to see and it's free!

BumandChips · 31/05/2019 23:45

Battersea park is nice and it has a zoo.

WitchesGlove · 31/05/2019 23:50

Both London Aquarium and London Zoo are overpriced and rubbish, btw.

I’d recommend Kew Gardens, Richmond Park and Waterstones Piccadilly (biggest bookshop in Europe) and also the London Eye

RainbowMum11 · 31/05/2019 23:52

Went with DD6, we did British museum (I found it boring but she loved it!) Rode a big red bus, boat along the Thames (both commuter not tourist ones, saved££££) bus to London Eye, walked over the bridge to HP (unfortunately Big Ben in scaffolding), through Parliament Square, St James Park to Buckingham Palace - tried to point things out but no interest!!! Also walked through Trafalger Sq and saw the statues.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 01/06/2019 01:47

There are fountains on the South Bank.

Kattyy · 01/06/2019 06:03

Changing of the guards in Buckingham palace, feeding the parakeets in Hyde park, feeding the squirrels in st James' park, watching the street artists in Covent garden, stroll down the south bank and watch the skate boarders/ often stuff happening in front of the national theatre + the sand artists near oxo tower.

Petalflowers · 01/06/2019 06:16

I went to London zoo recently and really enjoyed it. I used tesco vouchers .

Also, went to British museum recently, and wasn’t that interested in it, appart from a few areas. Great building though.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/06/2019 07:35

Duck tour and cable car.

giddyyup · 01/06/2019 08:21

Some great ideas here.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 02/06/2019 10:57

British Museum currently has a Manga exhibition on so might be good for anyone with teens. Runs through most of the summer holidays.

The water fountains at Queen Elizabeth park in Stratford

Ghost walk meeting at bank station.

SisterMaryLoquacious · 02/06/2019 11:44

I’ve never done a ghost walk in London, but we loved the one we did in York. Quite tempted actually - I wonder if DPILs would like one.
