DD 17 has a long term medical condition which effects her stomach (among other things) and has been advised that cutting out gluten may relieve some of the symptoms.

After a lot of searching the shelves in Asda, I am rapidly discovering that a large amount of the gluten free products in there involve chocolate and much though we all like a bit of chocolate, we can't survive on it.

I have access to Asda, sainsburys, lidl and occasionally Morrison's.

Please can I ask for your recommendations of gluten free staples and where to get them and please feel free to add any recipes.

Tia

There should be tonnes of options. Carb-wise: rice, rice pasta, rice noodles, corn wraps, potatoes, quinoa.
Snacks: gf oatcakes, gf breads (Waitrose is meant to do a good wholemeal one)

Thicken sauces with cornflower, watch out for gluten in sauces, stocks and gravy granules.

There should be lots of recipes online via google.

There are also usually gf options for common cereals, or obvs there’s porridge for breakfast.

You don’t have to buy special gluten free things. You can do normal wheat free food.
Vegetables including potatoes.
Meats of all sorts but check sausages and burgers.
Rice.
Oats
Nuts and nut butters
Cheeses except some blue cheeses.
Avocado
Coconut
Eggs
Fish and shellfish
Beans and lentils
Dairy

Most supermarkets have a gluten free aisle nowadays too.

Thanks @moreismore. Tbh I have found gf bread and pasta type stuff but I was thinking more of things like stock cubes, sauces and so on.

The ones I normally use aren't gluten free and I'm hoping people can recommend some specific brands that work for them.

Has she been tested for coeliac disease before you cut it gluten? Lots of things are naturally gluten free and most supermarkets have large ranges in the free from aisle too

Have a look at

Knorr stock cubes are apparently gluten free

thegreatcrestednewt · 30/05/2019 20:01

The above link contains links to lists of foods and brands that are GF.

dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 20:01

What sort of sauces do you mean?

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 30/05/2019 20:02

When I was doing the fodmap exclusion diet last year, I had to make my own stock so that it was free from gluten and all other fodmaps. I can’t find the recipe but it will be online, and involved making the mixture and freezing it, then scooping out a tablespoon of frozen mix at a time and adding to boiling water. It was really yummy and didn’t take long to prepare a large Tupperware tub full.

manicinsomniac · 30/05/2019 20:08

I have a naturally gluten free diet (I'm not allergic, it's just the things I like eating happen to not contain gluten):
chicken
fish
eggs
fruit
vegetables
nuts
potatoes
rice cakes (can't guarantee free from traces of gluten, I just checked)
ice cream

I think it's only really bread, cake and biscuits that are going to cause a problem isn't it? Some crisps maybe. Oh, and fried things I guess if there's a batter/breadcrumb coating. I might be being woefully ignorant there though!

AngelicInnocent · 30/05/2019 20:09

Thank you for that link. That's really helpful.

She doesn't have coeliac @dementedpixie, she is receiving treatment for her condition but some of the symptoms are similar to coeliac and cutting gluten should help to reduce them
