Not to eat hot meals?

NotRamona · 30/05/2019 19:05

Apparently this makes me very unreasonable according to work colleagues and I’ve had raised eyebrows about teaching my DC good habits and if I feed them properly (I do)

I just detest hot meals and am much more happy with a plate with the likes of pita, nice cheese, chorizo, coleslaw/Ballymaloe relish, olives, crusty bread, sushi, turkey slices, beetroot, branston pickle etc etc.

Is this really so unusual?
I cook hot meals for DC.

I live in Germany and it's common to eat mostly cold food in the evenings, like bread with cheese and meats, and vegetables. Although most do eat a hot meal around lunchtime so I guess it balances out. I think as long as you're getting everything you need for a healthy and balanced diet, and your children are too it's not that strange.

clairemcnam · 31/05/2019 12:36

I come from a farming family, and they always ate a hot meal for lunch and cold meal for tea. But that was because they were working on the farm so could pop to the house for a hot meal. Totally different when you are commuting to work.

IDontDrinkTea · 31/05/2019 13:14

Out of interest, what do you do if you go out for a meal?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 31/05/2019 20:48

I could live on cold food. I could hapily not cook, if it as just me I wouldn't. Grazing is a way to sustain yourself that's just as valid as sitting down to meals.

shazkiwi · 01/06/2019 00:13

I had this preference when I was pregnant with DD2. I went off meat, hot food & hot drinks for a while so I had food aversions instead of cravings during pregnancy.

feelingverylazytoday · 01/06/2019 00:49

I did this last summer during the very hot weather. Just had sandwiches with salad, fruit and yoghurt, a few nuts, stuff like that. Was absolutely fine and will probably do the same again this year.

validusernameok · 01/06/2019 01:11

I don't think it's weird at all. You like what you like. I'd take an antipasto platter over a stir fry any day!

GibbonLover · 01/06/2019 01:26

YANBU not to eat hot food. As long as you're getting all your nutrients, why should the temperature of the food matter?
YABveryU to call it 'picky' food though, that's gross!

Nameisthegame · 01/06/2019 02:05

In Spain it’s pica pica lol I love cod Catalan pizza yum yum xx I do like cold or warm food over hot. I tend to just let it cool.

A good sandwich can definitely be a meal, I had roast pork stuffing, salad, tomato,Parmasan, salad with mustard and balsamic yesterday it was great!

PregnantSea · 01/06/2019 02:31

This is extremely weird. I'm not surprised you shocked the office. I would be shocked. But YANBU, you're just unusual.

The important thing about your diet is that it's healthy and you like eating it. If you check those two boxes then it's fine.

Also, eating raw vegetables is healthier than cooked vegetables. I still cook a lot of mine because I like hot meals but if you don't prefer the taste when they are cooked then it makes perfect sense to eat them raw - this is actually healthier.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/06/2019 03:18

The oddest thing about your post is that these people even care about what you prefer to eat. For fuck's sake, you're an adult and can eat whatever you like and shouldn't have to justify it to anyone.

Ferii · 01/06/2019 05:30

Yeah its a bit unusual. I get preferring picky, bitty meals, certainly for lunch at work, but there are lots of hot options for that style of eating too. Nice tapas, dim sum, there's an Indian version a bit like tapas with lots of little dishes which escapes my memory right now, build your own tacos/fajitas etc. There are a tonne of hot options you could try if you like the bitty, variety type meals. I think its healthy for DC to see their parents eating a variety of food and trying new things. Ultimately its up to you and I hope your diet is balanced and varied enough.

Loopytiles · 01/06/2019 12:06

OP has said she has a history of and some current eating issues.

This is v likely to be part of that.

Shallowhals · 01/06/2019 12:20

Not quite the same, but my mum was/is horrified that I refuse to cook every day.

I hate cooking, find it so tiresome especially since half the time the DCs dinner goes in the bin anyway. I had my DC very close together and decided there and then I wasn’t going to cook every day. It was so incredibly stressful trying to get dinner on the table with two screaming babies. I wasn’t going to be a martyr. So I only cook maximum 4 days per week. I usually make enough to pop in the freezer so that the DCs have reheated leftovers but sometimes I don’t and I’ll have something like you mention in your OP, or just pull anything from the cupboards/fridge etc etc. my mum (and clearly tons of other judging by this post) think you MUST have a “proper” dinner every day? Why? Says who? Food is food is food. I think it’s conditioning.

We’re actually a very healthy family, tons of fruit and veg, no junk except for parties/special events so I can’t for the life of me see the problem 🤷‍♀️

jennymanara · 01/06/2019 12:38

Loppytiles Yes I suspect it is a way of restricting intake.

swingofthings · 01/06/2019 12:46

I eat cold meals 90% of the time, mostly salads. I just like it better but yes, most people think it is strange.

ilovesooty · 01/06/2019 13:33

No one else's business what you eat.

I don't recall anyone in real life refer to picky food. Horrible term.

echt · 01/06/2019 14:05

Amazed you even talk about your eating habits in the workplace. Or feel validated by internet randoms.

Picky food. Bleurgghhhh.

BenWillbondsPants · 01/06/2019 15:53

What do you have when you go out for dinner OP? Would you just have salad? And what about Christmas dinner! My favourite meal in the whole year. 😂

buggerthebotox · 02/06/2019 08:29

I'm like you, OP. I never eat hot food at work because there's nowhere to sit. So it's a sandwich in front of the computer or in the car.

I'm the same at home too: mainly picky bits for me in front of the telly. In winter I add in a cup soup.

I dislike cooking, find it a chore, and if it weren't for DD I probably wouldn't cook at all.

I go out for meals though, on a fairly regular basis, as a social thing.

I can't understand what business your eating habits is to your colleagues, tbh.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/06/2019 23:13

I would eat less hot food if I was on my own. I can't be arsed with different stuffer different people.

I just HATE cooking. I hate cooking, and I hate having to think of things to cook, and I hate preparing things to cook.

But I like to eat cooked things . . . I just hate all the faff.

Verbena37 · 02/06/2019 23:27

OP, as long as you’re getting all your nutrients, why does it matter what anybody thinks.
People at your work are obviously judgey and narrow minded.
You are cooking fine for your DC’s too.

I much prefer cold food. I could eat shop bought sarnies or salads for lunch and tea. For brekkie I usually eat muesli or porridge but I love eating porridge oats cold just with yoghurt and fruit or cold milk.
I love different salads but I think if I didn’t ever eat hot food again, I would miss potatoes the most. I do love a jacket pot.

Don’t worry at all that you prefer picky foods. At Xmas, I live off picky foods as I always totally go off eating meals because that’s all everyone thinks about and advertises. I spend a lot of Xmas feeling nauseous due to all the seasonal glut so tend to live off cold food then.
