If an incident is given a crime number by the police

But the crime number is then closed, does that mean everything, including the offender, is on record should there be any further incidents?

Posting here as legal tends to be extremely quiet.

Is it a crime reference or an incident number?

HotSauceCommittee · 30/05/2019 17:57

Yes, OP, certainly for the next few years.

Motherof3feminists · 30/05/2019 17:58

I had a log number, then gave a statement, and it was given a crime number.

Sorry, forgot to include: would it show up on pre-employment checks? It was DV harassment (against me) and I'm just wondering what information they keep on file. The police have been rubbish and they just text to say it's been closed with no explanation. I've requested a proper response to my request for further info but so far have received nothing.

If the person wasn't convicted of a crime in court then I don't think it shows. Was he cautioned or convicted or nothing?

SinjunRivers · 30/05/2019 18:11

Cautions and convictions show

hellenbackagen · 30/05/2019 18:16

Crime recording standards mean if you feel you've been victim to a
Crime it's recorded as such. Clearly this is not always the case.!

If you have recorded a crime naming a suspect it will be recorded with the force you've recorded it with. If it's been closed it means there is no actual evidence to realistically prosecute any suspect. Means it's
Just your say so that the suspect is the suspect and there isn't any independent evidence. Ie - cctv, independent witnesses etc.

If a victims believes a crime has taken place a crime must be recorded regardless of whether it
Actually has.

hellenbackagen · 30/05/2019 18:17

No
Conviction means it won't show in a dbs.

hellenbackagen · 30/05/2019 18:18

It will be held by the recoding force but only in police systems.

No conviction means it won't be recorded anywhere else.

Motherof3feminists · 30/05/2019 18:21

They spoke to him. Twice and were considering "bringing him in to interview" and next thing I know I'm told it's closed. There were independent witnesses, he admitted both incidents and there was cctv. Hence my confusion.

Have you entered into conversations with the suspect despite alleging harassment?

9 time out of 10'wheningwt an investigation like this the "suspect " shows me
The text conversations which show
It's been a two way conversation and not harassment.

My advice is always stay no
Contact with an alleged harasser because if
You responded it's blown it
For
Court.

hellenbackagen · 30/05/2019 18:27

If he showed a cop evidence that it wasn't harassment but a two way street it will get binned.

No reasonable chance of prosecution at court if you responded.

Is this the case by any chance?

Motherof3feminists · 30/05/2019 18:34

@hellenbackagen no, I've not had contact with him for quite some time. No texting, no conversations. I don't even look at him.

OP posts:
hellenbackagen · 30/05/2019 18:38

So what is he doing that constitutes harassment?

Is there evidence?

Manclife1 · 30/05/2019 19:04

Crimes or only closed when the offender is charged/cautioned etc otherwise it’s filed pending further evidence coming to light. So it stays on file pretty much for ever and ‘may’ get disclosed during a DBS check. As a victim you are also entitled to know WHY a crime was filed. If you’re not getting the answer you want from the officer in charge of the case make a formal complaint.

Deelish75 · 30/05/2019 19:28

With my incident (harassment/stalking) I was told the crime number and all the info would remain on file. The police spoke to the perpetrator but he ignored them so they “reopened” it. He was never prosecuted (he was a teenager from the local high school and I also didn’t want my then 7yr old having to make a statement/give evidence) but the police went back and gave him the bollocking of his life threatening him with arrest and prosecution and he has stayed away from us since then but I’ve been told it is still in file ready to be “reopened” if ever the need arises.

hellenbackagen · 31/05/2019 11:09

My advice is also to speak to the officer in case and see what the outcome was.
You should be told if a crime is being filed and why.
