to expect to be paid on time

For the second month running (3rd time in less than a year) my employer isn't going to pay my salary on time.

I am not self employed, a contractor or work for a small business, I work PAYE for a global, professional organisation, with a contract that says I will get paid on the last working day of each month.

At 4pm this afternoon I, along with all of my colleagues, have received an email advising that they "apologise for any inconvenience but salaries will be paid 4 days late this month"

All my direct debits, including mortgage are set to come out on Monday - what do I do?

Do I have any chance of getting compensation from the company for bank changes - what about my credit rating, argghh it's all such a mess, I could do without the stress of ringing the banks etc I just expect to be paid when they have contractually said they will pay me!

What did you do on the previous months?

justwannabeapid · 30/05/2019 17:05

they were only 1 day late paying.

I have the majority of my DD's set up to come out on 1st or 2nd of each month, but 4 days late just messes everything up!

Do they mean 4 days or 4 working days? What day are they saying you will get paid? I would tell them they will be liable for any charges you incur by direct debits not being paid. What excuse have they given?

dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 17:12

Do they have a cashflow problem? Is there a payroll department you can talk to?

ShesABelter · 30/05/2019 17:13

Sounds like there's cash flow problems. I'd go speak to my manager and as if they know ask what is going on, contact payroll I'd also contact acas to see where you stand. Then I'd look for a new job. Contact your bank with regards to a short term overdraft.

orangeshoebox · 30/05/2019 17:15

is the payroll in europe? it's a bank holiday in many countries and banks tend to do maintenance works this thursday and friday so payments can be delayed.

no excuse for your employer though.

orangeshoebox · 30/05/2019 17:17

forgot to add, last working day in may was yesterday in europe + 4 days is sun/mon...

Merryoldgoat · 30/05/2019 17:17

Cashflow issues without a doubt.

Start looking for a new job - lack of cash is the biggest reason businesses fail.

ChipsAreLife · 30/05/2019 17:20

This happened to DH.. company went bust but luckily he got out first. Please look for another role.

I have no advice re the bills coming out, unless a family member could loan it to you or bank could offer a short loan?

dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 17:20

Last working day in the UK is tomorrow. Also depends if they mean days or working days

PurpleCrazyHorse · 30/05/2019 17:23

Moving your mortgage payment can be a pain, we had to pay twice in one month to facilitate it, but we moved all our DD's to the 7th of the month. Just gives us some breathing space in case anything happens to DH's salary. I would definitely spend some time moving things and look for a new job.

Outanabout · 30/05/2019 17:33

I agree with ops, look for another job. I'd worry the firm was having money problems.

Talkingfrog · 30/05/2019 17:44

We had a problem one month with pay not going through until a day after expected. The reason given was genuine (no concerns that there were financial difficulties). In the email telling us that it would be a day late, we were also told that if any charges were incurred to speak to personal with proof and they would look to reimburse.

justwannabeapid · 30/05/2019 19:29

Thanks all, it is a worry they may be having cash flow issues, whether they are or not their cold communication shows a distinct lack of regard to their employees and they have made no offer to assist with any charges incurred, so on balance I will take your advice on board and start seriously looking for a new role.

In the meantime my brother has offered to do a bank transfer to loan me enough money to cover my DDs until I get paid.
