I have just trailed three cyclists during the course of the day. Honest to God, why don't they just pull over and let people pass?

As of 2020 the vehicle tax is going back to be used directly for the roads according to the budget in 2015 so whether it’s called road tax or anything else as of next year that’s going to be it’s purpose again.

Biancadelrioisback · 30/05/2019 17:56

Holy shit!!

Hold the press!!!

A driver is annoyed at cyclists??!!

OP, cyclists get pissed off with drivers. Drivers get pissed off with cyclists. Drivers get pissed off at horse riders. Horse riders get pissed off at drivers. Cyclists get pissed off at horse riders. Motorbikes get pissed off at all the above, and all the above get pissed off at them.
This is what happens when people share because some people are arseholes or can't see past the end of their nose.

Eliza9919 · 30/05/2019 17:57

They have as much right to he there as you do. Over take when it's safe to do so like you would any other vehicle.

Well they don't really, seeing as they dont pay road tax.

YANBU op.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/05/2019 17:57

It's not a popular opinion on here OP, loads of DHs secret "hobby" is cycling. I'm with you though. I certainly wouldn't do them any harm and I do drive considerately but I love when it is absolutely pissing down and they stay at home. I live in an area with cycle paths that aren't used (apparently the "wrong" kind of paths) and also have to put up with just about being knocked over by mountain bikes if a deign to go for a walk in the local woods. I have a friend that has just given up and moved from her lovely village to a town beside a motorway as she can't get anywhere at the weekend because of groups of cyclists on the narrow country roads. Her usual 15 minute drive to local town to get to train/shops etc takes around 40-50 minutes at the weekend.

Folk that are simply cycling as a mode of transport to get to work etc don't really bother me, it's a means to an end and they are usually the most considerate and law abiding, it's the hobbyists that annoy me most.

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 17:59

Ignorant drivers. Please realise that most cyclists are also drivers!

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 18:02

Lol to moving next to a motorway because of cyclists!

REDCARBLUE · 30/05/2019 18:07

I loathe then. Even though I live rurally is a great down hill run for cyclists from the mountains and they do well over 30mph coming down a hill which is on a bend in the village. No regards to the traffic pulling out. If a car comes they come slowly but the cyclist take the fucking piss.

Rule 163 of the Highway Code states that when passing cyclists, drivers should give "as much room as you would when overtaking a car".

Those likesarahjconnorcomplaining that "packs" of cyclists unfairly impede their progress are presumably breaking this rule, which is why they can overtake single-file cyclists more easily?

Spot on. Every single person who complains that it is harder to overtake cyclists when they ride 2 abreast is admitting that they will happily overtake single cyclists dangerously.

A cyclist should be given as much room as a car when overtaking. I'm a cyclist and a driver and I would say around 30-40% of cars overtake dangerously. As a driver, I know full well that it is not difficult to overtake safely, even on winding roads, so have no sympathy with people whinging about being slightly delayed.

Furrydogmum · 30/05/2019 18:09

My dh is a keen mtb and Rd cyclist. I loathe the cyclists who ride 2-3 abreast and hog the Rd I also loathe horse riders who ride 2 abreast. I equally loathe ignorant dangerous drivers - there are good and bad in all sections of Rd user and they all deserve equal loathing imho.

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 18:11

I see many more bad drivers than cyclists . Never seen a cyclist on their phone....

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 18:14

I pay road tax. Must cyclists do as most are also drivers.

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 18:14

Most

WiltedDaffs · 30/05/2019 18:15

Well they don't really, seeing as they dont pay road tax.

Oh jeez, not another one...this is going to be like “cancel the cheque”.

You bought a car, not the road.

Ylvamoon · 30/05/2019 18:16

Road cycling around our parts is dangerous! Small winding country roads mean you have to take your life into your hands if you want to overtake one ...
I don't mind cyclists, but please use the dedicated paths, of which there are many around here. No need to become the next road kill or be the first on the scene of an nasty accident.

jasjas1973 · 30/05/2019 18:21

Hate, loath, detest, arseholes..... you people are talking about a human being who you've never met.

Maybe their job is a Nurse, Doctor, Vet, Fireman? someone's son or daughter? Partner? a mum or dad ?

Perhaps you should look at your own behavior on the roads that kill about 1800 per year, 300 of which are children, serious injuring about another 10,000, not too mention ruining the local atmosphere and giving 1000's asthma and other lung diseases but fuck that, you've been delayed by 1min..........

FWIW the car drivers that i see overtake cyclists aren't slowed down at all, they over take anywhere, on coming traffic, blind bends.. and rarely slow down, usually far too close to the rider.

glueandstick · 30/05/2019 18:22

ITS NOT ROAD TAX. ITS VEHICLE EMISSION DUTY.

Phew. Feel much better.

ForalltheSaints · 30/05/2019 18:22

OP YABU. Your approach suggests you should not have a licence if you are that impatient. Sadly the lax laws that apply to motorists mean you will be allowed one.

Frouby · 30/05/2019 18:23

Furrydogmum usually horse riders riding 2 a breast are doing so because the one on the outside is providing support to the one on the inside who may be young or inexperienced or nervous in traffic. It's for the safety of everyone. Horses can shoot sideways at 30-40 mph, weigh usually in excess of 400kg and you don't want that meeting the side of your car do you?

HillRunner · 30/05/2019 18:23

Small winding country roads mean you have to take your life into your hands if you want to overtake one..

Er.... it's actually the cyclist's life you're risking!

As a cyclist (I do all my short journeys by bike if possible) I have at least one scary near miss a week due to dangerous drivers. They would walk away from a collision with me, but I wouldn't.

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 18:25

Well said jas

Napqueen1234 · 30/05/2019 18:25

YABU I have a theory drivers only ‘hate’ cyclists because they suspect they ought to be there taking that healthy, environmentally friendly, free excellent mode of transport and release that passive aggression in road rage. Perhaps those 3 cyclists were pissed off by you trailing them today?

YouBumder · 30/05/2019 18:29

Well they don't really, seeing as they dont pay road tax

For the hard of thinking

What you call road tax is in fact vehicle tax. Which is dependent on the emissions your vehicle produces so some cars don’t pay any either. Payment of vehicle tax does not give you the right to drive motor vehicles on the road. The thing that does that is called your driving licence. Which many cyclists do also have as they often drive cars too.

ThinThighsPlease · 30/05/2019 18:30

They're a fucking nuisance
