AIBU to bloody hate cyclists

I have just trailed three cyclists during the course of the day. Honest to God, why don't they just pull over and let people pass?

The era of the car is dead

Owning a car will be considered like smoking is now. Selfish and harmful to health and the environment.

In the near future we will HAVE to walk, cycle and use public transport.

There is such a hang up with cycling because traditionally it was seen as something poor people did or had to do - and the car was considered a status symbol.

Oh and you breathe in more pollution INSIDE a car than you do cycling along a road...

TurboTeddy · 30/05/2019 21:44

It's an interesting thread with quite a lot of strongly held views. I am or have been a car driver, motorcyclist, cyclist and pedestrian. I sympathise with the OP, whilst there are many very inconsiderate car drivers I simply cannot get my head around the sense of entitlement exhibited by some cyclists. I rarely see motorcyclists, pedestrians or horse riders behaving with the kind of reckless disregard for their own safety as I see regularly from cyclists. If I am driving and another road user is behaving impatiently then I try to let them to get past me as quickly as possibly, I want to concentrate on the road ahead not be distracted by what I see in my rear view mirror. This often means allowing someone in the wrong to have their own way on the road but then I am aware that being right doesn't feel quite so good if you're dead or injured so I'm content to prioritise self preservation.

whydobirds · 30/05/2019 21:49

Cyclists in general? Yea, unreasonable to hate them.

The two pricks from the local cycle club standing having a chat in the road who saw me coming (slowly, its a blind bend and single track) out of the end of the unmetalled lane I keep my horses down and decided to block the road I had just turned into with their bikes then shout at me that I shouldn't be driving down there? (It's a road...an actual tarmaced road and I and many others drive down it every day)...Hate away there.

But that's not a cyclist problem, it's an arsehole problem.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/05/2019 21:49

Why don't they wear pants? I'm sick of all the arse cracks!

Many cyclists wear bib shorts which come way up over the waist front and back. And cycling jerseys are by nature usually cut longer at the back too. Arse crack on show is just not a cycling thing.

So I assume you are either lying for effect or complaining that you can see the outline of their torso. In which case, you need to grow up.

CassianAndor · 30/05/2019 21:50

Octonaut have you ever watched Colony? Set in LA post alien invasion, and no cars are allowed anymore so everyone is on bikes. Looked bloody amazing.

I would cycle more if it wasn’t for the fucking cars Grin.

spot102 · 30/05/2019 21:53

But if you are in 'normal' clothing the trousers get pulled down and tops ride up when on a bike hence cracks exposed. Which is why we wear lycra clothing suitable for the job in hand

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/05/2019 21:53

whilst there are many very inconsiderate car drivers I simply cannot get my head around the sense of entitlement exhibited by some cyclists.

Yet there are rarely comparable "I hate all motorists, all cars need to be banned" threads, are there?

Why are people so happy to accept hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries year in, year out as perfectly fine; but absolutely lose their minds if I decide to stop them dangerously overtaking me for 30 seconds?

(Such a ban on cars would significantly affect me as my driven:cycled ratio is massive. But I'm not a cunt about vulnerable road users)

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/05/2019 21:57

Yeah, but you know who really fucks me off with their wanky outfits? Swimmers.

Who the fuck do they think they are with their poncy one piece revealing everything? Kids might see! And those stupid rubber hats - their heads won't melt ffs. All of them splashing round like they think they're Michael Phelps. They need to ban swimming, they are all just exhibitionist selfish wankers.

spot102 · 30/05/2019 21:57

Round here I think the biggest problem for drivers is that the cyclists go past them in the traffic jams and it makes them cross. Doesn't help that tho odd one (and you've got to be odd to do it) then jumps the next red traffic light! Infuriating

glueandstick · 30/05/2019 21:59

The department of transport says that cycle paths are designed for up to 12km/hr and anyone doing 18km/hr should be on the road.

And no, they don’t wear pants but the serious ones have bib shorts which stop them coming down. Borat type of things.

ivykaty44 · 30/05/2019 22:00

Spot so drivers don’t want cyclists to overtake them when they drive at 3mph.. really
Next you’ll be saying all the cyclists should get in cars and drive with them and take their parking soaces😉

twojackrusselsandamoggie · 30/05/2019 22:02

@spot102 why wouldn't cyclists go past cars in traffic jams? That's one of the many benefits of being on a bike, you don't need to sit in a long line of traffic. There's a reason why there's that big box at the front by traffic lights with a picture of a massive bike on it. Drivers are cross because they want to be able to get to the front too!

UserX · 30/05/2019 22:02

God car drivers are thick. Imagine thinking you have complete right of way over all the earth just because you have the most dangerous vehicle.

HJWT · 30/05/2019 22:03

What pisses me of is they want us to go as wide as possible around them but cycle in the middle of the fu**ing lane making THAT impossible then shout shit when you go by them to close 🙄🙄🙄

ivykaty44 · 30/05/2019 22:05

Cassin st Margaret island in Budapest doesn’t have any cars - it is amazing

ivykaty44 · 30/05/2019 22:07

hjwt have you ever been doored by a parked car or squashed into the kerb by a driver squeezing passed - if you have you’d know why they ride taking Center lane

YouBumder · 30/05/2019 22:09

What pisses me of is they want us to go as wide as possible around them but cycle in the middle of the fuing lane making THAT impossible

You should be waiting until the other side of the road is clear to enable you to get over there to overtake safely so it shouldn’t matter that they’re in the middle of the lane.

OrangeSamphire · 30/05/2019 22:09

They are an absolute pain in the lanes round here.

Especially from now until early Sept when it’s mostly holidaymakers who have no idea what they are doing and seem surprised when they come across a car.

Single track lanes round here are main routes not just jolly holiday tracks to bimble on two abreast nor to take racing lines down windy hills and expect to come out alive.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/05/2019 22:09

The department of transport says that cycle paths are designed for up to 12km/hr and anyone doing 18km/hr should be on the road.

A pp commented how she uses a local cycle lane with her children and it's just super. I am an overweight middle aged woman on a not particularly light bike and I comfortably ride between 10-14mph as a leisure pace (downhill I'll be going 25-30mph). Better riders than me easily cruise at 15-20mph on the flat.

So no, I don't think the safest place for me/better riders, OR that pp/her kids, is her wonderful cycle path.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/05/2019 22:13

What pisses me of is they want us to go as wide as possible around them but cycle in the middle of the fuing lane making THAT impossible

What pisses me off is your complete lack of road safety, intelligence and sense of entitlement. But my opinion isn't liable to kill or seriously injure someone.

clucky3 · 30/05/2019 22:15

I know I shouldn't but I hate them too. A big proportion of them are awful, massively inconsiderate road users

whydobirds · 30/05/2019 22:18

I used to ride a motorbike. Riding in the middle of the lane is the safest place to be. Means you don't get mashed into the kerb/parked cars etc. Overtaking is done same as you'd overtake a car. On the other side of the road as and when there is a safe amount of room.

Now...what REALLY pisses me off as a car driver is impatient arsehole drivers who can't wait behind a cyclist and come barrelling up on the wrong side of the road when there wasn't enough space to do ao without forcing oncoming traffic to slam their brakes on.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 30/05/2019 22:24

Arse crack on show is just not a cycling thing.

Yes unfortunately it is - when lycra is stretched too tight it becomes nearly sheer & leaves nothing to the imagination 😳

UserX · 30/05/2019 22:24

As are drivers, but we are taught that drivers are the default and somehow we just don’t take notice. Do you ever drive anywhere without seeing a motorist breaking the law? Speeding? Shooting through a light as it’s just gone red? Not stopping at a zebra crossing? Not using indicators? All these behaviors could (and do) kill other road users but please focus on the cyclist that took up 3 whole minutes of your day.

You may be prejudiced against cyclists but whilst they are staying fit you’re sat inside a box of pollution killing yourself slowly
