...do you have a middle name, perhaps a secret one I don't know about?!

The aibu is that I'm howling with laughter, is that wrong?! He's filling in student finance forms, he knows I don't have a middle name! Grin

I once had to fill in a form online for DH with
DHfirstname
Somepeopledon'thaveamiddlename
DHlastname

as it would not accept a blank box for middle name.

Talk us through the joke.

Why all the outrage?

Lots of people find out things about their parents that they never knew before. Even now in my 30's my parents occasionally tell me things about their past that are news to me. Admittedly it's unusual for a parent not to tell their children something about their name, but it can happen. Many people don't use middle names on an everyday basis, so you never know what other names somebody might have.

Perhaps (lighthearted, obvs) the OP's DS thought as a child that Santa had brought presents, then later found out this wasn't true, so he wonders what else his parents might have neglected to tell him. Perhaps he's taking the task of filling in student finance forms seriously, and checking everything carefully, as you're supposed to. Perhaps he's also heard stories about people who don't disclose their full names for whatever reason, use their middle name as a first name, dislike their given name so much they use something else, if their middle name gives them initials such as MAD... the list is endless.

Perhaps the OP laughed because the question was so unexpected, rather than at the content of the question.

This reminds me of the sort of English comprehension question that I used to dread: "why do you think the two boys who hate each other at the beginning of the story become friends by the end?".

I tell you what I am laughing at, all the comments just because people don't find it funny so there must be a reason for it 😂
