Upset about baby crying

chanellover · 30/05/2019 07:06

Friend sends me text saying .. " look at this cute princess ...
Along comes a ten second video of a ten month baby strapped into her high chair, crying and distressed , trying to get out .
Aibu or ridiculous to have felt upset?
Said it to friend who said that the baby is a drama queen .
I just could not get me head around someone taking a video of a distressedbaby when she could have taken her out and soothed her .
I can be a little sensitive though too.

I know a lot of 10 month olds that will cry in their high chair for various reasons.

They haven't had their food yet and it will be in front of them in the next minute
They have finished their food
They launched their food across the room

Not necessarily just that they don't want to be in their high chair. I think YABU. It was a 10 second video, not 2 minutes.

Ok thanks .

Your friend sounds a bit... simple, calling a 10 month old a drama queen.

chanellover · 30/05/2019 07:17

I think it was in response to me being a bit bemused by the video . I know of course ten month old babies cry and get upset but it was the video that I thought was strange?

I'm with you. I hate videos or pictures of upset babies or children. It feels like for those moments the adult supposed to be caring for them was obviously more concerned with and amused by watching them than comforting them. I think as the child that must be quite a frustrating and unsafe/unsettling feeling.
I think it's completely different to "ignoring" a tantrum for whatever reason. It's actively enjoying it.

Preggosaurus9 · 30/05/2019 07:21

That would make me uncomfortable too.

Also calling a 10m old a drama queen is either ignorant or disgusting.

chanellover · 30/05/2019 07:22

It was taken in a moment in time as my friend was attending to the baby . I found it upsetting for some reason . I don't like to hear babies crying hysterically and left in their cots or buggies either so this may say more about me than my friend. I suppose o could t understand why my friend didn't pick up baby and comfort her instead of taking a video of her

Whilst I would never record her having one of her tantrums and I do try to soothe her, my 10 month old screams the house down when she's put into her high chair, every single time. I try to sing or do silly voices to distract her - usually one of the dogs walking in to see what all the fuss is shuts her up though Grin

SherlockSays · 30/05/2019 07:25

To add, I don't pick her back up out of it, I need her in there for a reason so it defeats the purpose, and she does stop after 15 seconds or so.

chanellover · 30/05/2019 07:28

My aibu is not anything to do with a ten month old baby crying .It's about my reaction to the baby being recorded .

My baby is going through a phase of hating his high chair. It's not because anything wrong. He just wants to be crawling and standing/trying to walk and bashing stuff.
He will protest and go stiff, refuse food and then suddenly be fine. Eat smile and bash happily away.
It's very very frustrating.
I'm sure your firneds baby is fine, but I think it's a bit odd to film it!

LynetteScavo · 30/05/2019 07:33

YANBU - seeing a baby in distress is never amusing.

My DS used to scream and cry and arch his back every time we put him in his car seat at that age- he'd be ok once the car started moving. It was horrible. I can't imagine videoing him before driving off. Sad
We didn't call him a drama queen. That phrase is reserved for girls who fuss, and I can't think of an equivalent for boys.

Spanglyprincess1 · 30/05/2019 07:39

My phrase when my ds does that is little git....what I say to him is oh dear nevermind and carry on doing it anyway.

NewAccount270219 · 30/05/2019 08:06

People definitely do say 'drama queen' about baby boys (around me, anyway). Studies show people are more responsive to baby girls' crying, in general - from a really young age people do the 'toughen up, be a big boy' thing to little boys Sad

I agree with pp that a 10 month old crying in their highchair for 10 secs is no big deal, but filming it is weird, and sending it to others is weirder still.

Slicedpineapple · 30/05/2019 08:11

I do agree that it's a bit weird filming it and sending it to people. And then calling the baby a drama queen. Drama queen isn't really the term I'd use to describe an unhappy 10 month old.

Thatsnotmyotter · 30/05/2019 08:19

I definitely refer to DS as a drama queen at times. Usually when he’s losing his shit about having his nappy changed. Of course I try to distract him by singing, doing silly faces, giving him things to hold etc. But I can’t stop mid-change for a cuddle. Sometimes he gets angry in his high chair of food doesn’t appear immediately (I swear to god he is a Labrador in a boy’s body) and he has to wait a minute or two whilst I finish off a meal. I don’t think it’s particularly classy to film it but when I’ve been at the end of my tether after a trying day, I probably have sent the odd photo to DH as a ‘look at what I’m dealing with whilst you’re having fun at work!’

SnuggyBuggy · 30/05/2019 08:36

It's an odd thing to film

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 30/05/2019 13:31

I think you're being quite insensitive. Your friend was probably being light hearted in an attempt to overcome her own stress about having a screaming child on her hands! As a PP said, when my DC is crying for absolutely no reason, or a ridiculous reason, I might light-heartedly call them something similar. She presumably sent a video as she was alone and maybe wanted someone to share with? You sound very judgy. My DC sometimes screams in the highchair because I haven't bought their food fast enough! I wouldn't be getting them out and soothing them, I'd be getting their food. She presumably made a short video to send you, a friend of her, to show you what was happening and maybe get a supportive comment. Instead what she got was a bit of a weird, dramatic, judgy response which is sad.

chanellover · 30/05/2019 14:09

Wow!!! You just made up an entire story there without a single fact to support it! That's a skill!! My friend sent me a video of her hysterical Child who was doing everything to try to get out of the chair . My aibu was whether I was being toosensitive to this as I found it weird to send me a video of a crying baby , albeit a short one, instead of comforting or trying to settle her and then calling her a drama queenwith laughing and eye rolling emojis . So there you have the facts . HTH
