HD TV being too HD?

I’m in a lovely holiday cottage at the moment, and the TV must be twice the size of ours back home. It seems quite fancy and it must be HD. Everything is so fricking sharp, it’s almost like watching a computer game, like the people are cut out and superimposed.

AIBU to ask if this is what all HD TVs are like? I’m not sure I like it!

I've always noticed this. It's like the actors are in your living room. Makes it too real almost. I suppose you'd get used to it eventually.

Beldon · 29/05/2019 22:18

You very quickly get accustomed to it and other tv pictures look bit rubbish

Oswin · 29/05/2019 22:20

My brothers tv is like this and it really disturbs me. I feel it takes something from it. No body else gets what I mean Grin

nomilknosugarplease · 29/05/2019 22:21

We’ve just upgraded from our ancient TV to a new flat HD one and I feel the same! I feel like I can see every single pore on people’s faces and it makes it difficult to concentrate on the whole picture as I find myself zooming in and focusing on one tiny square.. I’m guessing I’ll get used to it in a few weeks.

BurntSausage · 29/05/2019 22:27

Yeah I’m sure when we got our tv at home a few years ago it took a bit of getting used to, I’d probably stop noticing this after a while. ITS SO IN MY FACE Grin it’s more real than reality and a bit unnerving, almost like in 3D films where you instinctively duck when something flies towards you!

I find people move weirdly as well, too smoothly and fluidly, I can't quite figure out how to describe it but it's there, and I find it unenjoyable as a result!

rosieposey · 29/05/2019 22:32

I find watching movies in HD is like watching a tv series, it's weird.

SugarToothbrush · 29/05/2019 22:35

For that awful 'soap opera' affect you get when watching things that shouldn't look like they were shot in Summer Bay you just need to turn off stupid 'motion smoothing' www.tomsguide.com/us/disable-soap-opera-effect-tv,review-5695.html

sunshine19781 · 29/05/2019 22:37

Turn 'movie mode' in picture options. Makes it less hyper realistic.

bumblenbean · 29/05/2019 22:40

Argh i really struggle with ultra HD screens too but can’t articulate exactly why! It’s almost like the movie is being filmed with a crappy camera or something - it just doesn’t look like a film should but I can’t explain why!! Shock

NeverSayFreelance · 29/05/2019 22:41

I agree! My dad has a 4K telly and it annoys the life out of me. The frame rate makes everyone look like they're moving too fast, and anything filmed more than 5 years ago looks like shit on it. I'm all for HD but I think 4K is pushing it.

BorderlineExperimental · 29/05/2019 22:42

The “soap opera effect” is down to a feature on most modern TVs which tries to make everything smoother and reduce motion blur, a side effect of which is things like films end up looking weirdly too real.

You’ll be able to turn it off in the TV’s settings.

magicBrenda · 29/05/2019 22:44

Yes I was like this when we hit our new one! Grin

It really put me off!

userxx · 29/05/2019 22:47

Yep, when I got my new hd 4k whatever it is, I felt seasick for about a week. You do get used to it but it was very off putting to start with.

Planetxyz739 · 29/05/2019 22:50

TV programmes are broadcast in SD, HD or 3D

Haggisfish · 29/05/2019 22:51

I HATE this, too.

OkOkWhatsNext · 29/05/2019 22:53

Yes I had to turn off the smoothing thing on our new tv as it made everything look like a dodgy soap opera set. Makes a real difference.

Cheerybigbottom · 29/05/2019 23:03

When we first got one my DH watches the film the Martian. I had to leave the room as the picture was so sharp I felt like I was looking out of a window at it!

It was uncomfortable but I guess I got used to it Smile

Nearlythere1 · 30/05/2019 12:46

@sugartoothbrush that's interesting, I didn't know the motion smoothness was a "thing". Thanks!
