Therapists Inevitably Experience Erotic Transference

Husband is a recently qualified psychotherapist who receives the monthly In Therapy magazine. I flicked though and found an article on erotic transference (where client falls for therapist). Magazine says that, inevitably, from time to time, these feelings will be evoked in the therapist; if I'm understanding it correctly.

I've also read that 5% of male therapists have admitted in a survey to having acted on their feelings towards their clients.

I'm seriously bricking it about this. I'm not the most secure person in the world - getting therapy myself for it.

AIBU?

Ridiculous article! This and other reasons are why supervision is essential.

I would say it's helpful to acknowledge that a. It happens, b. It isn't unusual and so you aren't special, c. acting on it is abusive.

If that is made clear, and your DH is not abusive, then you can trust him surely? It's the equivalent of kids falling for teachers.

Transference of all kinds happens in psychotherapy, maternal/paternal feelings etc. Projection etc. The therapist is a blank slate in that way for the clients issues to be surfaced against, worked through and resolved. If your husband is a reputable p/therapist he will be under supervision and in therapy himself to work through his own 'stuff' that inevitably comes up in the patient dynamic, not limited to erotic but his fears...as well as practical advice...such as when it may be appropriate to not start or end therapy. It sounds as though you have picked up on the issue being also with you so helpful to go through what's underlying this (I'm assuming it's not because he's cheated before of course)

Yabu, the risk is tiny. He's much more likely to die in a car crash. (sorry).
