To not understand why tons of people believe artificial sweeteners are more harmful than sugar?

There is no scientific evidence to back up the various claims that it's addictive, carcinogenic...etc. Yet I'm always reading posts on social media that disparage sugar-free drinks as dangerous and harmful to health, without a shred of evidence being offered.

I do understand that some people dislike the taste (so-called 'supertasters' apparently experienced a bitter aftertaste) but that doesn't make it harmful!

I try and avoid them if poss. San Pellegrino is gross now, which is a shame.

Smeghead90 · 29/05/2019 22:18

My kids have a condition called PKU and they can’t have aspartame at all. So basically it’s going to be that in the very near future they can’t have any soft drinks! It makes me so angry

SoyDora · 29/05/2019 22:18

Surely no one thinks Diet Coke tastes just like normal coke?

ToffeePennie · 29/05/2019 22:20

Aspartame gives me horrific migraines, makes my periods awful, long and painful, makes me have the runs. The awful, awful taste of it.
If I allow my kids to have a taste of it, we have days of sore tummies and horrible nappies.
It’s just not worth it, I’d much rather have a natural sugar, than the fake stuff.
(I’m pro vaccination and NOT a flat earther. I also am totally atheist and don’t cloth bum or attachment parent)

They taste fucking disgusting. I don't care if they are good or bad for you, drinking piss would be at least as pleasurable as saccharin/aspartame/sucralose flavoured drinks. I avoid refined sugar most of the time and can go weeks and weeks without it. But I'd rather have sugar on occasion than an artifical sweetener ever.

ineedaknittedhat · 29/05/2019 22:27

Apparently, they stimulate appetite as the body is fooled into thinking you've consumed sugar, so releases insulin which lowers the blood sugar and makes you hungry.

I've always avoided artificial sweeteners and I've never drank fizzy pop, even as a child.

Sweetners never were a problem to me back in the days when they were only in diet products because I have never "needed" or used diet products. As they began to infiltrate standard products, I gradually dropped brands such as Robinsons because they tasted rubbish. Actually, I can remember one day waiting for pick-up from school with a persistant sweet, metalic taste in my mouth... several hours earlier I had unusually had an Apple Tango from the school canteen rather than my usual Calypso juice carton.

I did notice that chewing gum gave me a throbbing headache. I though it was the repetitive chewing action until I tried a different brand upon dentist's advice and realised it was the aspartame. The Lidl version was better, but still left an after taste and stubborn thirst for the next few hours, the same issue I have from soft drinks.

Last spring, I ended up pouring several litres of squash down the drain because I initially couldn't work out why my usual High-Juice or Ribena now tasted like soap... it was the sugar tax stealth recipe change. No change of recipe was highlighted on the packaging, just small detail tucked down the ingredient list and a change of colour coded dietary information.

I just think our understanding of mass consumption of artificial sweetners is poorly understood at present. Science is great. I like the way science proves on a mass scale that my kids are safer from the MMR vaccine than the high risk of being moderately ill with a combination of measles, mumps or rubella through their childhoods and possibly suffering less common, more serious side effects. Areas such as gut health are pretty new areas of study. Science can only prove what you know you are looking for. The science of nutrition has had a lot of misunderstanding and misleading information in recent decades. High fat was bad. Eggs were bad for cholesterol. The NHS is being slow to catch up with improved understanding, meanwhile the problem of obesity increases.

With the temporary exception of two pregnancies, I have always maintained a healthy weight and active lifestyle. My teeth are fairly decent too. I seem to manage a sensible intake of sugars from full sugar (and full fat) products. I drink a lot of water and fruit tea (just don't like tea or coffee and am intolerant to milk) and like some sugary drinks along the way through life as only water to drink would get pretty dull within weeks.

My kids mainly drink water. I have no qualms about giving them the occasional red label Coca Cola given the visible detail of their ribs and abdominal muscles that are barely concealed by their skin. I do have qualms about artificial sweetners, particularly when quite strong in a product like Fruit Shoot because DS1's mood is explosive afterwards.

I'm not saying ban sweetners, but they do clearly cause a section of society identifiable problems, and there should be some kind of choice out there other than plain water or Classic Coca Cola for people who have no need to be forced towards diet products. Labeling of food and drink should always be clear.

notso · 29/05/2019 22:31

So, I'm a 'super taster'.

Siameasy · 29/05/2019 22:37

Taste hideous and give me mouth ulcers. It’s a chemical made in a lab, how is that food? Ridiculous product.

Pk37 · 29/05/2019 22:42

Because they’re are artificial crap . There’s a reason some have been banned !

alittleprivacy · 29/05/2019 22:42

I’m not a “super taster” whatever that is,

20-25% of the population have quite an increased number of fungiform papillae (tastebuds) on our tongues. It's a mendelian trait and one or both of your parents would need to be a supertaster in order for you to be one. An easy general test is how do you feel about cucumbers. Refreshing but tasteless vegetable that gives salad a crunch. Or vile, evil, tasting pox that makes everything it's ever touched taste like it's been doused in perfume. If you feel the latter, you probably are a supertaster. Most people can't taste cucumbers, supertasters will not only taste them but will taste anything they have ever touched and it will be disgusting.

Pk37 · 29/05/2019 22:44

And at last I’ve met my people !
Everyone thinks I’m weird because I think sweeteners are fucking disgusting, I can spot them a mile off in drinks and would rather full sugar drinks any day of the week over that fake ,nasty stuff

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 29/05/2019 22:45

I wonder if people who think it tastes vile are just used to incredibly sugary things? Nope, I don't have a sweet tooth really but enjoy an occasional can of Coke when hungover. Cannot see how anyone could not tell the difference between sugared and artificial. Foul.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 29/05/2019 22:46

ALittlePrivacy that's interesting because I hate cucumber too!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 29/05/2019 22:47

And coriander. Tastes of soap.

BeckyAnnLeeman · 29/05/2019 22:48

supertasters get overwrought about coriander

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/05/2019 22:55

Why is it ‘overwrought’ to dislike the taste of something that tastes soapy to me, @BeckyAnnLeeman? I don’t know if it is to do with being a super taster (I don’t think I am), but apparently some people are genetically programmed to taste coriander as soapy and horrible.

No need to use judgemental language, imo.

LittleCandle · 29/05/2019 22:57

Artificial sweetners make DD1 very wheezy. She's asthmatic and can't tolerate any of them, but aspartame is the worst by far. I remember reading an article long ago that said this, and yet we found aspartame in asthma drugs! I was actually checking the drug for other ingredients that DD1 might have been allergic to. That was the first thing listed, so therefore was the largest amount of ingredient. Pretty poor.

BeckyAnnLeeman · 29/05/2019 22:58

Oh good grief, I wasn't being entirely serious.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/05/2019 22:58

@BrightYellowDaffodil - have you tried Belvoir Lime and Lemongrass cordial? It tastes lovely (especially with fizzy water) and has no sweeteners.

U2HasTheEdge · 29/05/2019 23:01

I do not believe they are particularly harmful.

Some people may not be able to tolerate them. My daughter can't tolerate strawberries.

I drink a lot of Pepsi max and I get bored of people telling me the sweeteners will give me cancer, or their pick of awful disease.

You actively gain weight drinking diet drinks. They are pointless!

Rubbish. I drink a lot of Pepsi max and have done for years and years. No effect on my weight at all.

It might trigger hunger in some, but the sweeteners aren't making anyone actively gain weight.

I do not agree with sweeteners being added to everything and the bloody sugar tax though.

notso · 29/05/2019 23:02

Most people can't taste cucumbers, supertasters will not only taste them but will taste anything they have ever touched and it will be disgusting.
Hmm now I'm confused. I certainly taste cucumber and everything it's touched, it is very perfumy but I like the taste of it. Same with soapy coriander.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/05/2019 23:03

Apologies, then, @BeckyAnnLeeman - I misunderstood.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 29/05/2019 23:05

Can't stand the taste of them, they're vile. I never drank many fizzy drinks anyway, but the sugar has been awful for me with San Pellegrino now full of sweeteners, I used to enjoy an occasional can. In M&S it's nearly impossible to buy anything fizzy without the damn things in.

Thank god Belvoir and Innocent are still drinkable.
