Brothers sharing a room

Posting here for traffic as need some inspiration.

We have two teen DS's, age 17 and 15. The oldest wants to go to uni next year so may not be around permanently but will be back during holidays etc.

Boys' room approx 3.9 x 2.9m. Current layout of their room is bunk beds against one wall on one side, wardrobe on adjoining wall & door on same wall, long chest of drawers that doubles as bookcase on top against third wall, large window with radiator underneath on fourth side.

They don't want bunks anymore but I am loath to lose storage - AIBU to ask for suggestions as to how to improve the space? Would like to incorporate a desk/study space if at all possible.

Thank you!

2 cabin bed with own spaces underneath? Probs do this for my boys when they’re teens, although they have a huge room but you could just pop them each a cheat of drawers underneath and a desk?

Loft beds. They each get a private area under their own bed.

Hmm. Was hoping to get away from high beds if at all possible, they feel they have grown out of the bunk beds!

I think in your situation loft beds is the only way to go, you can get ones with wardrobes and desks underneath.

If DS1 is going to uni soon you should consider a pull out double?

Sofasurfingsally · 31/05/2019 09:58

I think those beds which are 3 fit high but with lots of drawers and cupboard space under.

Get them to work it out. Draw a scale model of the room, add moveable scaled shapes of beds and other essentials- you can probably do it on line. But if they don't want high beds, let them sort out an alternative. You don't want to lose storage space, but to them an ordinary bed might be more of a priority.
Also worth sitting them down with an ikea catalogue for ideas.

I agree. They are old enough to work it out. Get them to draw a layout of the room measured and what furniture they would like and how it will fit. Makes your job easy

Let them sort it out, if they don't want bunk beds (and I wouldn't at that age) tell them to plan the room. Loft beds will likely make to room feel very small and the head hight underneath may not be practical. Have you thought about properly using the storage under their beds if you get two single beds? For example, those beds where the base is all storage or having a carpenter make well fitting deep slide out drawers?

Look up Studybed.co.uk. very ingenious but not cheap so budget dependent. Basically a fold down bed/ desk combination

wigglybeezer · 31/05/2019 10:14

Ive seen various other ingenious but cheaper solutions, ill see if I can find them.

My ds are 14 & 19- we done away with cabin beds they were far to big for them!

We currently have 2 single beds, that lift up for storage underneath. A slim book case with all their Xbox games (why because they are all down loads now anyway!), another bookcase, a desk for their gaming PC with their monitor which is 42inch curve so takes up the whole desk and tower underneath, then a 7ft long wardrobe with mirrored sliding doors- it’s split into 10 compartments on one side, so they have 5 each , and then on the other a high hanging rail and a lower, but they’re clothes are all mixed as they wear some of each other’s.

To be honest we are talking about getting rid of the singles and having a large double- ds19 is not at home often between friends, his dads and girlfriends, so the boys talked and came back with the idea, said they were happy to share when both at home together, and often one will sleep in living room after watching movies anyway, so that’s likely are plan going forward.

Sorry and the tv stand with their Xbox and tv. Their room is cramped and it’s not a small room either! Lol
