Duke of Edinburgh Gold residential

AIBU to think that accepted residentials all cost a fortune and therefore exclude some young people from completion?

My sister is doing her Gold expedition this year, but all the residentials she can find cost hundreds (or even thousands!) of pounds to attend, or require a minimum age of 18.

What have your DCs used as their residential?

TIA

Have you tried national trust work camps

2dogsand1baby · 29/05/2019 12:56

@Hollowvictory Minimum age of 18 so no good for her for this summer Sad

She may need to do some fundraising to go towards it.

bengalcat · 29/05/2019 13:04

Mine did NCS last summer - there is a residential section there - we live in London and it cost £50

bridgetreilly · 29/05/2019 13:05

But also: Residentials in the £0-50 category

Youth orchestra if she plays an instrument.
Volunteer at a brownie/guide camp (in a different group to hers if she;s a member)
Sports camp.
national citizens service (NCS).

bridgetreilly · 29/05/2019 13:06

Huh, okay it won't do the direct link to the filtered results, but I promise there are some.

Lilylauren98 · 29/05/2019 13:07

I'd advise going through the scout movement & i did all mine with them at a fraction of the cost.

Rosieposy4 · 29/05/2019 13:07

Stem camps at various universities, tiny fraction of the cost.

2dogsand1baby · 29/05/2019 13:08

She is an Explorer Scout so this might be the way to go! Thank you Smile

Fundraising is surely the answer?

My dds both did World Challenge, which was very expensive, but we weren’t expected to foot the bill ourselves.

They did all sorts of things to raise the money - washing all the cars on our street, cake sales, a sponsored 10k etc.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 29/05/2019 13:11

Youth hostel volunteering. Wont cost anything.

Or, do all the other bits, and then do the residential once 18, eg post A levels?

Waveysnail · 29/05/2019 13:26

I did mine with air cadets. Cost the price of food and possible £10 for camp sites we stayed on. We walked for 4 days and stayed at basic campsites aka fields and one night wilderness camping.

capercaillie · 29/05/2019 13:27

Plenty of cheap ones - YHA and canal camps are the cheapest I’ve found and I’ve heard positive things about them

Waveysnail · 29/05/2019 13:30

Oops that was expedition. Residential we did with national trust

CrispbuttyNo1 · 29/05/2019 13:33

I work at yha and the volunteers always love coming to us. It's an outdoor activity centre so there's loads to do as well.

jojojowo · 29/05/2019 13:40

I went to Revitalise they have centres in Southport and two down south (can't remember where exactly). Spent a week volunteering and it was one of the best experiences I have had. It was free too. Check out the website

Remember u can't know anyone on the residential for it to count for D of E.

Lyricallie · 29/05/2019 16:03

Our girl guides can do it through us and I think it's mainly fundraising applying to company grants that have benefit funds and lots of back packing and coffee mornings.

That isn't true. You can go with a friend, so long as you're in a much larger group of people who you don't know. Similarly, you won't be disqualified if you happen to know one of the staff members, but it can't be an organisation you regularly work with.
