To be paranoid about chicken pox?

hmmshallwe · 29/05/2019 06:56

We're away in about 2.5 weeks and I'm so worried about DC catching chicken pox before we go and having to stay in hotel room/not fly home

I know it's unlikely but I keep hearing about it on here - is that just because I'm looking for it?

We met a baby the other day who'd had it a week or so previously but was all scabbed over so I don't think we're at risk from that exposure but it's made me cautious which is silly, I don't want to restrict DC's activities until we go because of my own anxiety

Please help me "give my head a wobble" as mumsnet says!

Why don't you just get them vaccinated?

Stopandlook · 29/05/2019 06:59

I was worried about this (overseas in-laws so regular trips / Christmas that could get wrecked if we can’t fly).
Got them vaccinated.

hmmshallwe · 29/05/2019 07:01

I didn't realise it needed to be same day as MMR or a month after, and only had MMR two weeks ago. Also with a risk of breakthrough virus infection I feel like at this stage this would be more risk than not!

When we get back, yes

Is this actually possible?

boobirdblue · 29/05/2019 07:02

Crosspost sorry!

Florin · 29/05/2019 07:02

I had the same worries when my child was small as it seemed that every party ended up with an added party bag gift of Chicken pox to the point I started turning down invites so I got him vaccinated which let me relax.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 29/05/2019 07:43

Whaaaaaaat!?!?!?

MRex · 29/05/2019 07:49

It needs tool be at least a month after MMR. If you had that 2 weeks ago then you can get the vaccine just before you go away. Make sure your DC gets the second vaccine as well, there's a risk of it not lasting if they only get one so DC could then get shingles in later life.

MRex · 29/05/2019 07:49

*to not tool (no idea what autoincorrect is up to)

hmmshallwe · 29/05/2019 08:09

@Mrex thank you, surely though there's more risk of problems with that if she comes out in breakthrough spots from the vaccine? Also it won't protect her if she's exposed between now and then unless she was exposed about three days before or less

I think I will do it when we get back and hope for the best in the meantime. We actually have way bigger things to worry about at the moment so I don't know why I'm anxious about this 🤷‍♀️

They don't tend to get many spots. It'll probably be fine, good luck!

Throckmorton · 29/05/2019 08:38

What has the number of spots got to do with anything? If they get 10 spots or 1000 they are still contagious and need to be kept away from the public

EveHen · 29/05/2019 09:18

We did not have any breakthrough spots or any other side effects of the chicken pox vaccine (for either of two jabs one month apart). A small cry then absolutely fine. I feel so relieved every time I see a warning sign up at nursery!

? Not true at all, who on earth told you that? Both my DC (and me as I had no immunity) have been vaccinated.

None of us had any spots.

Get the vaccine.

We were in contact with a child the other day that came out in spots the next morning. He had what his parents thought was an actual spot on his head when out with us. We’ve a busy few weeks with exams, christenings, schools trips etc. we now just have to ride the wait out as the gp said wait until after the 2 weeks have passed as they could still get Chicken pox even with the vaccine. It takes a week to order it in here and you have to pay up front before they order it. So couldn’t even get it within the 3-5 days recommendation.

But we’ll definitely be getting them vaccinated after the 2 weeks if they don’t get it-the kids were hugging and kissing. Especially our 15 month old who loves to hug and kiss other kids. My dh has said sod the cost (it’ll be €400 for the two kids for us) but we can claim back some on insurance (as were in Ireland).

We have a big holiday at Christmas so really don’t want that to be ruined as we had to keep them away from so many kids last December as it was rampant and we had a holiday then too. I think it’s 100% worth getting the vaccine (although dd5 has been in contact with so many kids before and never got them).

I am immune, but have never had them. But for peace of mind, I’m getting it done.
