To call for a second European election

MoanyMoanyTodaySorry · 28/05/2019 23:53

I mean, the vote clearly didn't go the way I wanted it too. Which of course, is the only 'right' way.

That pesky brexit party should never have got all those votes. The people who voted for them clearly must have been Ill informed and ignorant.

And, as a privilaged person in society, middle class and obviously intelligent and far superior to the brexiteers, it simply must be the case that my voice and my vote is listened to above the riff raff voting for brexit.

It is imperative that the election be held again ... and again ... and again ... and again until it goes the way I want it to.

Ditto for the recent referendum ..

Who is with me

Is there really NOBODY who a. wants Brexit and b. can spell?

Nobody?!

I mean, it's English - the irony is very much not lost.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/05/2019 23:56

Yanbu.

sonlypuppyfat · 28/05/2019 23:56

Well I think the voting forms should just have one square to put a cross in, so we don't get it wrong

MoanyMoanyTodaySorry · 28/05/2019 23:56

ps. Hope you see the irony and tongue-in-cheekness etc.. before I get too much of a flaming! And I obviously appreciate not all remainers are like this!! (sorry to offend if I have) but sometimes I can't help but feel so flipping patronised and annoyed ...

We voted to leave .... Just respect that ... We r not all ignorant racists ... Grrrrrrrrrrr

Yup, frizzygreenwater. None of the millions of people from all walks of life who voted for Brexit can spell whatsoever. I've checked with every single one, and know all of them personally.

You’re right actually - you’re not ALL ignorant racists

arethereanyleftatall · 29/05/2019 00:04

Within 8 posts, we've had two people picking up on the op's spelling. Isn't that rather frowned upon?
Can someone please tell me, please, just one reason why pointing out a spelling mistake is acceptable? Please, just one tiny reason. I just want to understand what can possibly be the benefit of it.

This thread can only go one way, but here's what I don't get:

What kind of person looks at Nigel fucking Farage and says, oh yes! This is the one! He represents me all right!

Right, actually, there are 5.25 million of them. I've probably even met one or two. I just can't get my head around it.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 29/05/2019 00:09

Well, the OP was taking the piss out of remainers...Suggesting they thought they might be more intelligent in some way

Just pointing out the irony 🙂

AutumnCrow · 29/05/2019 00:11

8.4% of the UK population = the will of the people these days apparently. It's been a funny old decade.

CorbynsComrade · 29/05/2019 00:12

Don’t worry OP, that type of attitude from hard core remainers is why we got Brexit in the first place and it’s why the Brexit party did so well.

arethereanyleftatall · 29/05/2019 00:12

For the full stop you need to press the '123' key. It brings up all kinds of punctuation you may wish to use, when formulating sentences.

MoanyMoanyTodaySorry · 29/05/2019 00:12

MrJolly..

Well, good to give them a little of what they want. Need to let them hold on to a little superiority :) To do otherwise would just be mean!! :)

If people who voted to leave can explain to me why they aren’t worried although there is universal acceptance that we will all be worse off out of the EU, in a way that reassures me that we haven’t fucked up everyone’s future, then I will shut up.
But categorising all remainers as wealthy and middle class is quite divisive.

LouiseMiltonSpatula · 29/05/2019 11:05

Ok, but we very much will have another European election. In five years that is absolutely something that is going to happen. And then another five years after that, and five after that...

Just in case you didn’t realise.

PissedOffProf · 29/05/2019 11:08

OP, you do realise that there will be another European election in a few years' time, right?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 29/05/2019 11:13

Very much doubt OP is aware of that...

Unless it's been covered in the Pip and Post books

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 29/05/2019 11:14

TheGoogleMum · 29/05/2019 11:25

The eu elections use proportional representation so all viewpoints are better represented so yabu (yes I know you were joking but it's very different!)

NataliaOsipova · 29/05/2019 11:33

I see it like this. The economics of international trade is a pretty complex and technical subject; as such, I’ve always thought it was a particularly stupid idea for a representative democracy effectively to delegate its responsibility to the general public on such a matter. It’s the equivalent of asking us all “Should this particular cancer treatment be available on the NHS?”. Without significant technical knowledge, it’s basically impossible for the average voter to be able to understand fully all the political and economic impacts of this decision.

But a vote was decided upon....so be it. But it really wasn’t ever an appropriate question. Do you want to remain or leave? It’s a bit like my asking you if you want to sell your house - yes or no? It’s not a question to which a binary answer is generally appropriate. Because context matters. And the selling price matters. Do I want to sell my house? For £20k? No. For £20 million? You can have the keys and all the stuff in it.

This is the crux of the argument for another vote. We voted to sell the house. Unfortunately, the “easiest deal ever” that was promised hasn’t come to pass. It’s like the estate agent promising you “it’s a hot market and you’ll get way over the asking price”...and you then get one viewing and an underpriced offer. Some people value sovereignty above all other things; they would be happy for us to be markedly poorer as long as we left the EU. But that’s not a point of view I think we can safely ascribe to everyone who ticked the “leave” rather than the “remain” box.

That’s why there needs to be another vote. On the actual, available terms we have from the EU. So - do you want Mrs May’s deal, do you want no deal or do you want to remain (and maintain the status quo). These are the actual options. (I just beg any no dealers - please, please be sure that you fully understand what “leaving on WTO terms” actually means. It’s an enormously complex can of worms, with enormous repercussions for the whole economy.....)

MindyStClaire · 29/05/2019 11:35

God I know I shouldn't bite but...

a) the elections will be held again in five years; and

b) it was clear exactly what we were voting for - MEPs to represent us in the European Parliament until such time as the UK leaves the EU (or five years elapse). The candidates and parties were able to put out clear manifestos, as at a general election.

In the 2016 referendum, it was never made clear what Leave entailed. There is evidence that if another referendum were held now, Remain would win. It would certainly still be close. So by not holding another referendum, we risk leaving the EU against the wishes of the majority of the electorate, and with a much harder Brexit than many felt they were voting for in the first place.
