Re work and childcare

A colleague called in today to say their parents couldn’t do the childcare this week, half term was too full on for elderly parents, so they weren’t coming in this week.
Our boss basically said they’ll give her today as emergency leave but the rest of the week has to be annual leave if she doesn’t sort something
She’s furious and has been giving it out over WhatsApp,
Aibu to think our boss was actually fair and deciding you’re having a week off to look after your kid should be holiday?? Everyone else takes annual leave to cover half term etc Confused

Boss is right, emergency leave is to make other arrangements - she needs to use it for that although I suspect she has no intention of making other arrangements! Parental leave should be requested in advance.

Had she arranged with grandparents for them to do it, and then they let her down at the last minute?

Yet again I notice it’s a woman pissing off her boss. What’s their father doing?

Your boss was being perfectly fair, and, as a previous poster said, if she doesn't like it then her husband can share some of the days off.

Tough! I’ve had to pay for my childcare. Though I’ve been annoyed at how many ‘friends’ over the last week have asked to share my nanny.

In my small team, a colleague has already booked this week off so in this situation, I might have been given the first day as emergency special leave but I would be required to be in work the rest of it, would not be allowed to book annual leave to cover the rest. You colleague is very fortunate to have the opportunity to book leave at such short notice!

Your colleague is cheeky as fuck. Unless her parents suddenly and unexpectedly became elderly over the weekend?!!

I wonder if she's gone away and actually can't come in, and thought this was a brilliant way to get the time off for nothing.

I had a colleague like this in my last job - he was always ringing in saying he had to look after the kids because his stay at home partner couldn't quite manage it that day. My manager used to let him have the time off paid because the parental leave policy was "discretionary". It wasn't, and I pointed out that it wasn't, but manager ignored it. Bred great resentment in the team as he was doing it at least once every other week, often on a Monday or Friday. Glad your boss is taking a firm line on it.

Do not engage on WhatsApp, she’s playing with fire, don’t be standing too close. My colleague once wrote how stressed she was etc etc someone agreed with her and both were disciplined as it showed the company on a negative light.

Boss has been more than fair letting her count the first day as an emergency. Childcare for the predictable period of half term is not an emergency and everyone else either takes annual leave or makes other arrangements. Absolute CFery to expect otherwise.
