To not be decided about how unsafe trampolines are?

Dd really wants one. I 'gut feeling' think they are unsafe. But, I don't know... EVERYONE ELSE seems to have one???

Aibu? Are they safe? Too risky?

We've had one for five years and my kids have never had an accident on there. Touch wood they never do. I'm happy we purchased one, my kids have enjoyed many a summers afternoon on it. Even I go on it sometimes.

HJWT · 28/05/2019 20:47

Depends on the parent, supervised children are fine, my almost 3 year old has one xx

IntoValhalla · 28/05/2019 20:48

We have one.
But my only condition was that if my parents wanted to buy Dd one for her birthday, then I wanted it dug down into the ground.
So ours is like the one in the picture....although our lawn is nowhere near as manicured as that Blush

They’re fine as long as you set it up safely and establish some ground rules. Ours is attached to the ground with weights and tent pegs.

Make sure the DC always zip it up when getting in and out. No somersaults, only a certain number of people at a time etc.

There are always as with anything, but we’ve had one for years and it keeps then happy for hours!

catcatcatcat · 28/05/2019 20:52

A&E say they keep them in business! So long as you're sensible then I think they're as safe as any other piece of equipment .... accidents can happen, but you can take precautions. Get the netting, make sure they keep it done up when they're on, maximum number of people too. And from personal experience (DD aged almost 3 broke her collarbone on ours this year) no balls on the trampoline. She bounced and landed on a football at an odd angle.

Confusedteacher · 28/05/2019 20:52

oops, that should be there are always risks as with anything

scifibi · 28/05/2019 20:52

Dd broke her arm really quite badly the year we bought them a trampoline but she fell from a climbing frame that had been H&S approved! Had the trampoline for 11 years now and not one injury. There are risks with whatever you do - you can avoid risks altogether and die of boredom instead!

RedPanda2 · 28/05/2019 20:55

If you have a ground one please check underneath it and put in a but of wood to help animals like hedgehogs climb out. They fall in and starve to death.

Hearthside · 28/05/2019 20:57

We have a big trampoline in our garden , had it 4 years now .One DC doesn't really bother with it now .But our youngest dc is always one it , we can see out the window and it has the safety netting and the rule is never bounce with the zip open. Our one dc did land awkward when we first had it and had to go a&e nothing serious and i debating taking it down and the physio she saw said kids have accidents but don't take it down it is excellent exercise and long they sensible they are fine .

Gintonic · 28/05/2019 20:57

We thought about getting one but decided against after reading up online. Though this was partly because we have a younger DC who we thought was at more risk of being hurt.

A friend's 3yo recently had a bad injury on one.

I do let my DC use them elsewhere, but I just didn't fancy the responsibility when friends come over and they all pile on. I can leave them unattended in my garden at present, if I had a trampoline I would have to supervise all the time.

Lelelel26 · 28/05/2019 21:01

We had one for 8 years, all well. Got rid of it as not being used any longer.

Dd then went to trampoline park and broke her leg in 4 places.

Millie2013 · 28/05/2019 21:02

I’ve got 2 friends who work in EDs and their stories have put me off ever getting one for DD and I’m quite gung ho when it comes to parenting

PoppyHxx · 28/05/2019 21:02

I think as long as it has a net everything should be okay

HairyToity · 28/05/2019 21:04

We don't have one due to the fact they often cause compound fractures. There is risk in everything though.

IceniSky · 28/05/2019 21:07

We dont have one but have a trapeze swing which scares me. Wish I never got it.

Boom45 · 28/05/2019 21:08

I've a friend who is a pediatric orthopedic consultant (or something along those lines, even her job title is too clever for me) and she reckons since trampolines have become more popular her workload has increased 10 times and she's seeing "far more interesting" breaks.
I'm sure most people are safe on them but i think the ones that aren't, or the one time they aren't, the results aren't pretty.
Luckily our garden is on a slope so we can't have one which has stopped me having to make that decision!

nokidshere · 28/05/2019 21:08

Accidents don't happen because of the trampolines, they happen because they aren't used properly.

Children are unsupervised, there is usually more than one child at a time on them, toys and/or pets on them, no nets, not dried after rain, and doing acrobats rather than jumping.

I definitely wouldn't have one in my garden. As a former trampolinist I have seen too many serious accidents even in a controlled class to deem them safe enough for home use. The worst one being our instructor who landed awkwardly and was paralysed from the neck down. And yes I do know everything they do carries a risk.

queenqueenqueen · 28/05/2019 21:09

I wouldn't get one x

RandomMess · 28/05/2019 21:21

I sent mine for trampoline lessons Grinbig rule was only one child bouncing at a time and safety net zipped up..

Nogodsnomasters · 28/05/2019 21:29

Christ I've just got one for my 4 year old this week, i didn't realise they were any more dangerous than any other park type equipment such as roundabouts and climbing frames?! My nephew has had one for 5 years and he has learning difficulties and has never had an accident so I thought it would be fine, am now questioning the decision!

vntr · 28/05/2019 21:30

I worked with someone who was left quadriplegic after a trampoline accident and it put me off buying one for my daughter. On the other hand my husband was a competitive trampolinist, he did suffer a couple of broken bones though.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 28/05/2019 21:35

When my kids were younger we lived very close to a hospital and many medics lived in our neighbourhood. None of them had trampolines so I rolled their lead and never took the risk.

PickledLilly · 28/05/2019 21:36

I’m a pretty laid back parent generally but I know of so many children who have ended up with really nasty fractures that I’ll never have one.

sar302 · 28/05/2019 21:37

I don't know about unsafe for my toddler, but definitely unsafe for my bladder!Confused

Fakenametodayhey · 28/05/2019 21:39

My neighbours three uear old just had surgery today and was put under general anesthetic because he split his face wide open... on a door frame. Everything has its risks.

We have reloacated our coffee table to a corner in the kitchen because its too dangerous For our one year old wjo keeps climbing on it.

However we have only had one accident on the trampoline in 13 years? And it was an 'ouch'accident not a serious one.

And we definitely didnt stick to safety rules. 10 people at a time. No blue thing to cover the strings never mind a net. We had a game crack the egg... where one person sits curled up and everyone else jumps so hard to crack them.

I was the child and am gutted my dad got rid of it. HVe 3 kids now
