AIBU refusing to pay this vet bill?

I have an elderly, poorly cat who I took to the vet last week. Vet did a consult and said he wanted to run blood tests which I agreed to. He never said how much they were. £140 when I got to the desk which I nearly fell over at but paid. He said he would ring with the results either that evening or the next day.

I was out when he rang back and he spoke to my teenage dd. He admits he didn't clarify who he was speaking to. He told her some of the blood results and said he'd like to "do some more tests" He said he wasn't sure what was wrong and was going to speak to someone and ring back the next day.

He rang the next day to say he thinks the cat has a terminal condition, we can do more tests to confirm. I declined as when I asked how much it will be £hundreds. Cat is 15yo.

I've been back at the vet today about something not to do with the cat and they called me over and said I need to pay £48 for the extra blood tests. I asked what they're on about and they said they'd run an FIV test after the other tests. I said I hadn't agreed to this extra and wouldn't have done.

Vet came out and said he'd spoken to someone on the phone who said ok. DD said she had no idea it was another blood test, that it would cost more money. She thought when he said he wanted to do more tests that I would need to take the cat back in for these tests and that's what he was going to ring about the next day.

I haven't paid. They've said they will knock it down to £40 and give me till next month to pay. I am close to ringing them up and saying it's not happening. There is no way I would have said yes to another £48 of tests and dd had no clue he meant to charge more or that she was actually agreeing to anything.

Problem is if I fall out with them its 8 miles to the next nearest vet. So maybe I should just pay to keep the peace. But I did that 5 years ago when my dog died during a routine dental and they billed me £300 for the dead dog. Now I just feel like they're fucking useless and taking the piss.

How old is dd? If she is an adult its reasonable to assume she consented to treatment bad practice though

AppleKatie · 28/05/2019 17:55

They are taking the piss. Your DD is not authorised to make such a decision, particularly as it was not made clear to her what she was actually ‘consenting’ too.

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 17:55

She's 17.

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 28/05/2019 17:56

Ah yes I’m assuming your DD is less than 16.

If she’s an adult she can pay and learn the lesson!

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 17:56

It's not her cat!

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 28/05/2019 17:56

Hmm grey area there I think it depends upon the extent at which DD fees she was misled.

knufflebuns · 28/05/2019 17:57

At 17 I would be aware of what was being said on the phone.

They should have confirmed with the owner before doing any tests.
My dog had a severe laceration on his shoulder from trying to jump a barbed wire fence I paid the bill to have it repaired 1 week later another vet went to take stitches out we said no as they didn't look healed they took the stitches out anyway. The wound opened back up and they tried charging us again to close it. After a stern word they waived the fee

NoSquirrels · 28/05/2019 17:57

Is 8 miles a big problem for you? I’d change, if I were you.

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 17:58

But the vet never said the extra test he wanted to do was on the blood sample he already had and that there would be a charge.

It wouldn't cross her mind that they could do another test without us actually physically taking the cat there. So she never consented to anything apart from agreeing it sounded reasonable to do more tests. She thought she was agreeing that I would bring the cat back. And that obviously if I didn't agree I wouldn't do it.

OP posts:
GruciusMalfoy · 28/05/2019 17:59

It doesn't matter how old DD is. She isn't the owner of the cat on the vet's register. I'd refuse to pay, they didn't have your authority to do the tests.

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 18:01

I guess 8 miles isn't the end of the world but it will possibly mean an afternoon off work, etc for the dog having it's annual boosters. The village vet stays open till 6:30pm so I can go after work.

YANBU
They should have specified the extra amount; your dd can't agree or not agree if she wasn't given details
Also they should have spoken to you directly

are the other vets any good? if you have other reasons to change, change, otherwise yes pay the bill but make it clear you're not happy about their behaviour (I wouldn't be)

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/05/2019 18:02

I would certainly dispute that..

1/ Failure to ensure the person he was talking to was the person who'd be paying the bill.

2/ Running an FIV test on an elderly cat HE thinks is terminal is very poor indeed, it wouldn't affect the outcome, it wouldn't improve cats welfare.

Charging for a dog that died in surgery, harsh but if they'd done the surgery, used the anaesthetic, etc etc then dog dies in recovery.. they have done what you've paid for... if they didn't charge for every animal who then dies or suddenly dies... I think they'd go out of business!

But I am with you on this charge, totally unprofessional on both counts.

wonderingsoul · 28/05/2019 18:02

Tbh your daughter should of said my mum will sort it out and told them to call back

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 18:03

Yes, I agree the dog was more of a grey area so even though I had reservations about how/why she died I paid the bill as I could never prove anything.

But this seems so wrong. I'm really cross.

sussexmum · 28/05/2019 18:04

I swear vets have dollar signs in their eyes sometimes makes you thankful for the nhs!

Veterinari · 28/05/2019 18:04

The vet should have confirmed who they were speaking to. I’m surprised that they didn’t

Are you sure your DD didn’t offer to take a message and agree to additional testing?
I think you have a reasonably good case for challenging it

YouCantSeeMeHere · 28/05/2019 18:05

I would go in with a 50% offer. They didn’t get your permission but it also cost them to run the test.

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 18:06

And he's said he thinks the cat has FIP and some FIP support group on FB reckon it's very unlikely that such an elderly cat would have FIP and that it's more likely to be cancer or even heart issues.

He never listened to her heart when I took her in!!!!!!

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 28/05/2019 18:07

So now I'm worried she doesn't even have what he thinks it is but if I want to take her back to have her heart checked it will be at least another £25 for a consultation.

OP posts:
Travis1 · 28/05/2019 18:07

Nope definitely not, our vet always clarifies a rough estimation before agreeing any treatment/tests. Not your daughters cat, not for her to agree anything. Vet sounds a bit wishy washy and I wouldn’t want them near my animals

Veterinari · 28/05/2019 18:08

I swear vets have dollar signs in their eyes sometimes makes you thankful for the nhs!

Oh hear we go with the ‘all vets care about is money’ bollocks

It’d Be nice if the general public educated themselves about the cost of private healthcare before slagging off a profession that has one of the highest suicide rates in the country and earns an hourly rate that most doctors wouldn’t get out of bed for.

But then it’s super easy to just others from a position of ignorance eh? @Sussexmum
