Front tooth has been dead from an accident 20 years ago, it's starting to become noticeably grey, never been flagged up in a checkup before, I was with denplan until 7 years ago, now just NHS.

Asked at checkup for options for this tooth, they decided to X-ray it, found out nerve isn't dead, but the tooth is, nerve is infected and requires root canal - but they won't do it, requires a specialist, a referral and £600.

I know I need to go back to the practice and question this further, as at the time I was just repeatedly told it required a specialist, Hence the price. But AIBU to not want to pay that amount for root canal, when a quick google tells me nhs root canal is £62.10? I don't have a lot of money, to have this done would require me taking out a finance agreement at the practice, or a loan.

Does anyone know why I'd be quoted this?

(P.S. they said if left, I'll develop an abscess and eventually just lose the tooth)

I am not with NHS dentist as none had vacancies when we moved here [26 years ago tomorrow!!!]. So we have a private dentist and pay a monthly fee which covers 2 examinations and 2 hygienist visits a year. Anything else is charged for.
I have just found out that a root canal I had done 5 years or so ago is infected. I was referred to a specialist and have been quoted about £700 for treatment plus £75 for X-ray and £75 for scan. My treatment starts Friday. I think I might need a mortgage!!!

Sorry you're also suffering, @redwoodmazza
My dentist is an hour from where I live, closest NHS one I could get! (And even then, that's because a family member was already a patient there) they said as it is the front tooth, I would potentially need a veneer or crown to improve the appearance after, which I'm just not going to think about for now, as the cost might cause me to combust. 😅

You would have been quoted that as most specialist endodontists are private and don’t do NHS work. As to why it needs a specialist you’d have to check with the dentist - could be anything from unusual morphology, a fracture or crack in the root or the root canal being sclerosed.
