Never heard it called a GE before!!!!! Grin

Crunchymum · 26/05/2019 23:12

Will a GE help though? Shock

RottnestFerry · 26/05/2019 23:15

I think people would vote very differently in a general election.

DockerDre · 26/05/2019 23:16

It would get them out of power though.

They aren't really in power anyway as don't hold a majority. Can't countenance labour though. Corbyn and Abbott. Shudders

RandomlyChosenName · 26/05/2019 23:18

Could well end up with out of the frying pan into the fire with a (much more) right wing party hoovering up their vote. I would be worried about a GE at this point...

ArabellaDoreenFig · 26/05/2019 23:19

The MEP votes were always going to be about sending a message - and the votes are going to be split between Brexit party and anyone but Tories/Labour.

If a GE was held this week it really wouldn’t change anything apart from Labour would lose seats to SNP, Lib-Dems, and Greens, the Tories majority may slimmer but none of the other parties would come close to gaining control as there is no effective opposition party at the moment. Hopefully the MEP results might finally get a Labour leadership challenge, the sooner Corbyn is gone the sooner we can get a decent opposition in place and start tipping the scales back.

We can but hope.

Labour has lost its heart lands And core support. It's shat on people for so long.

Corybn had a chance to win back that core vote shat on by Blair and brown. But they never openly support breixit.

If they had... different story

DockerDre · 26/05/2019 23:27

Ok, looks like massive support for Brexit.

OP posts:
DockerDre · 26/05/2019 23:28

I'm very surprised to be honest.

OP posts:
Poloshot · 26/05/2019 23:34

You're surprised? In England outside of London the majority of people are for Brexit so why is it a surprise?

DockerDre · 26/05/2019 23:37

It's a surprise that the party in power has 8% of the vote.

There will be a general election only if there is a successful 'no confidence' vote.

The one in January was lost. I'm not sure it wouid be possible to call one whilst we have a resigning PM. So new PM over the summer, parliamentary business won't really resume until autumn (might return a bit earlier, but cannot imagine sitting in August). Is it likely that there could be one before October?

Labour don't want to be in government right now. I think their leader does want us out of EU, but doesn't want to actually do it, or to contribute to it being done as well as it could be.

noodlenosefraggle · 26/05/2019 23:41

All the vote shows is that the country is still split in half. Labour will have to cobble together a coherent policy pdq as well

Tiscold · 26/05/2019 23:42

Labour and corybn especially don't want to be in power right now.

  1. It means he has to actually pick a position, he's eurosceptic and has said he wants to leave before, but then pushes remain sometimes and soft leave others, so really he can't decide and wouldn't want to be made too.
  2. It would destroy them, look at the cons right now, labour wouldn't want that and especially as the blame for the shit show could be passed to them.
Drasticaction · 26/05/2019 23:44

The party in power offered referendum.

People voted. .. to leave. The party in power then rescinded on that vote. .

Now support going.

Leavers are not racist. If they were, ukip would be surging. .. ukip has fallen. .. brexit party is 6 week's old!! 6 week's!!

BlueCornishPixie · 26/05/2019 23:48

It's not massively in support for brexit, it's very much still split. Green and lib dems are often adding up to more than brexit party.

The thing is is leavers are very pro-democracy, so they won't be happy pushing through brexit with an unelected prime minister, or a party with such low support.

AuntieStella · 26/05/2019 23:50

Given that both Labour and Tories are still Brexit-supporting at a party level, the Leave share of the vote is comfortably over 50% at the moment.

Turning in now - wondering if all UK results will be in by the time I'm awake (and possibly alert) in the morning
