Help with cast iron frying pan please!

Had something different to eat tonight - DH made a mushroom frittata. Cooked for a few minutes on the hob and then into the oven. It was lovely but it’s all stuck to my cast iron frying pan. I am soaking it now which I hate to do but have googled and got so many different answers I’m not sure how we can clean it off. Any ideas please.

Soak it in some clothes washing powder or a liquitab...make sure you rinse it thoroughly afterwards

Nooo, don't use detergent! I would soak it in cold water for a few hours, then scrub it with a brush and plain hot water. This is how I clean my cast iron frying pan and the griddle pan, also the wok.

Well since you all seem to be cast iron experts, I have an unused rusty one, how shall I clean it And then what do I use it for?

I bought it years ago thinking it would change my life.....

Very fine steel wool to remove the rust, then re-season it.

You use it for everything. The more you use it, the less non-stick it becomes.

Make a paste with salt and water and scrub it off. Then buy a chainmail scrubber for future.

I never wash my cast iron pan, just wipe it with kitchen roll to get off the excess grease. But I never use it for anything "wet" - just steak, saute potatoes, stuff like that.

I bought it when I left home in 1975, and it has the most wonderful patina.

But yes, very fine (00 grade) steel wool, should sort it. Then, put it on the hob with some oil in, and heat it up until the oil is almost at smoking point. When it's cooled, wipe it with dry kitchen paper to get rid of the excess oil, making sure you get into the "corners".

It should be fine.

Ok, so any dry cooking e.g. sausages, beans, fried tomatoes, shallow fried stuff, that sort of thing?

Put some water in it and bring the water to the boil- then dump out the water and scrub off any remaining burnt-on bits (no washing up liquid!) under running cold water.

Give it a wipe with oil when you're done.

Make sure you season it after a wash with plenty of oil.

This is a little video of how to restore it to its former glory

Mollypolly2610 · 27/05/2019 18:29

Thanks for all the tips. DH is still scrubbing it today!

rolled up ball of tinfoil used to scrub works well

I put it on to boil then simmer with a can of coke in. Leave to simmer for an hour and bobs your uncle! Off the muck comes
