I found it in a bag outside a charity shop.

Lady on Antiques Roadshow said she found an 18th century glass in a bag left outside a charity shop. No. You stole an item donated to a charity which has now lost out on potentially £1k. There is a chance that the shop wouldn't realise the glass was an antique but still, she stole it!! AIBU?

Unless there’s more you know she could have bought it in a charity shop and been told the story of it being left outside.

Wauden · 26/05/2019 20:33

At least she could donate some money to the charity!

MrsJackRackham · 26/05/2019 20:34

She was asked where she got it 'I found it in a bag of glasses left outside a charity shop'

What more does the OP need? The women admitted to taking it from a bag outside of a charity shop not buying it? That's theft no matter how much she tries to sugar coat it and its deprived the charity of money owed to them.

HappyHammy · 26/05/2019 20:35

It's a bit sad people looking through bags that are left outside charity shops but they do ask you not to ,lea ve anything on the pavement.

LoafofSellotape · 26/05/2019 20:35

Any items left outside the charity shops go straight in the bed as they've probably been sprayed on by animals and pissed up men coming out of the pub and Lots knows what else. Huge notices in the windows saying do NOT leave outside and still people do. So of it was this scenario she might not have stolen anything at all .

LoafofSellotape · 26/05/2019 20:36

**in the BIN not bed 😂

Langrish · 26/05/2019 20:36

If she was just a member of the public and actually rooted through a bag intended for a charity shop yes, that’s straightforward theft and she needs to give the item/proceeds from a sale straight back to them.
Or did she mean she works there and found it (and was on the programme representing the charity)?

MrsExpo · 26/05/2019 20:37

Refer to the other thread bout “is this stealing?” ..... theft in the other thread, and theft is this case too. Removing property that doesn’t not belong to you is stealing. End of ......

FuzzyPuffling · 26/05/2019 20:37

We just spotted this too and were disgusted by her "aren't I clever?" smug bastard attitude. Hoping karma bites her firmly in the bum.

thegreatcrestednewt · 26/05/2019 20:38

Well, items donated to a charity shop should be handed in when the shop is open, not dumped outside. Our charity shops ask people not to do that, and i’ve Seen people going through bags outside charity shops. Sounds like she was cheeky - though technically if you leave stuff outside a shut charity shop, the stuff you leave is fair game. If you want the charity shop to benefit, take the stuff in when the shop is open!

Samcro · 26/05/2019 20:39

So glad im not the only one who thought she stole it

SerenDippitty · 26/05/2019 20:41

I suppose she could have spotted the glass in the bag, taken it into the shop and said “I’ll give you £5 for this” but then she would have said wouldn’t she?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 26/05/2019 20:42

If you want the charity shop to benefit, take the stuff in when the shop is open!

So it's ok to steal something because someone didn't give the items into the shop and the instead left them outside. Just because someone didn't hand them directly into the shop doesn't make what she did acceptable.

Bluerussian · 26/05/2019 20:43

Charity shops hate people leaving bags outside their shops when they are closed and make a point of it. Something left on the street belongs to no-one.

LoafofSellotape · 26/05/2019 20:43

If you want the charity shop to benefit, take the stuff in when the shop is open!

I agree.

thegreatcrestednewt · 26/05/2019 20:45

No, I didn’t say it was ok, but it’s pretty daft to leave stuff on the pavement. Dogs and men might wee on the bags, foxes could get in, they could get rained on and everything ruined - grim.

The charity shop might have binned everything in the bag anyway, so she kind of did them a favour.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 26/05/2019 20:46

Our charity shop gets really annoyed if you dump stuff outside, they would probably be happier if someone stole the stuff in the first place. They also go through everything you donate and hand back a lot of it. They only seem to be interested in high ticket furniture items now.

TheInvestigator · 26/05/2019 20:46

It's not theft. The stuff was dumped by the owner on the street. It was rubbish. Until the charity shop actually claimed it, it's just dumped rubbish.
People are told not to leave stuff outside the shop because it will be taken or it will be peed on!

However, morally she knew that stuff was a donation so she knew she was taking it when it was intended for the charity. Even though the charity hadn't taken possession.

MitziK · 26/05/2019 20:48

I really hope the arsehole who flytipped stuff from a relative's home outside the charity shop saw that as well.

JacquesHammer · 26/05/2019 20:48

Does she definitely mean she took it from outside?

Or that she found it and bought it from the charity shop in a bag that had been left outside?

chuckyeggtimestwo · 26/05/2019 20:50

She’s a bit daft admitting that on camera! Has she no shame?

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/05/2019 20:50

could have been meant for bin. I was a manager for years. Doesn't mean it's right though.
And yes people do piss (and worse ) on donations , inc opening the bags and re sealing them

Walkingdeadfangirl · 26/05/2019 20:50

She didn't steal it as the stuff was just fly tipped on a pubic pavement. Charity shops hate people dumping crap near their shops. It could only have been stolen if the charity shop had taken possession of the items first.
And for all we know the woman gave a large donation to the charity.

IceRebel · 26/05/2019 20:52

Does she definitely mean she took it from outside?

Surely if she bought it she would have just said so. The use of the word found implies no money changed hands. No matter your opinion on leaving bags outside shops, I think it's awful that she took it. I bet she knew the item was probably worth a fair amount. Sad
