To be disappointed that COOK use palm oil?

I but meals from COOK when I can't be bothered cooking. The initial selling point of COOK was that they only used ingredients you would find in your own kitchen. I went there today and chose a main meal, and went to choose a pudding. I chose one but there seemed to be a lot of ingredients, so read them, and was surprised to read palm oil.
COOK really need to up their game. I said to the assistant that I didn't know they used palm oil, and he confirmed yes they did.

So AIBU to have expected better of COOK?

On positive side came home and have started to make a rhubarb crumble instead.

how about making cake yourself & checking ingredients - seriously - when companies make things its done on large scale/convenience (for them) & economy -- its is sad but if you want to avoid palm oil than check ingredients. Many people have to do this all the time; vegans/vegetarians/religious reasons/ health/ loosing weight/gaining weight/ allergies & intolerance -

clairemcnam · 26/05/2019 16:58

I normally make it myself. COOK is my easy go to when i cant be bothered.
And there is no such thing as sustainable palm oil. It is a marketing con, and it is still bad for your body.

Why don’t you just buy a cake if you really can’t be bothered?
Think you’re overthinking it OP

bibbitybobbityyhat · 26/05/2019 17:01

That's severely disappointing.

Babymamaroon · 26/05/2019 17:04

YANBU. That is disappointing and enough to put me off. I hate palm oil and the devastating impact it is having on wildlife and our environment ☹️

CitadelsofScience · 26/05/2019 17:08

Hmmm that's quite disappointing given their target market. We have one in town that I always forget is there. Was thinking about popping in and stocking up on a few meals to get through the next few weeks. I think I'll rethink that now.

Nanny0gg · 26/05/2019 17:08

Had the fish pie the other day (delicious)

Used sunflower oil

Phew!

YANBU

If you're boycotting Palm oil you need to avoid products with SLS, shampoos etc as these are mainly derived from palm oil

clairemcnam · 26/05/2019 17:23

I try and avoid palm oil as much as possible. I am not saying I always succeed. And yes I do try and buy toiletries that are better for the environment.

goose I've gone sls, sulphate free shampoo and conditioner and my hair is great after three days, her was before, humph.

insideoutsider · 26/05/2019 17:39

You do know that there are millions of people in the world who use palm oil in cooking just like olive oil and sunflower oil, right? It has lots of health benefits if you dont overuse it. I'm of African decent and I have a bottle in my food cupboard. Back 'home', locals have the trees and make the oil.

Palm oil has been heavily demonized here because it's cheap to grow if you have lots of land. And so they've used it in soaps, shampoos etc whereas it was previously used solely as food. It's the aggressive farming that's bad, not the oil.

clairemcnam · 26/05/2019 17:42

Perhaps they do. But it is not as healthy for you as the oil it is replacing in ready meals, chocolate and processed food here.
And if you are buying ready made food in the UK, it will not be made from palm oil grown in someone's backyard.

clairemcnam · 26/05/2019 17:43

The reason it is not good for you is that it is very high in saturated fats.

OP posts:
Siameasy · 26/05/2019 18:00

Yanbu about the environment

about saturated fat; it’s not bad for you and doesn’t cause arterial furring. Palm oil has good levels of anti oxidants and Beta carotene in it.

Siameasy · 26/05/2019 18:01

*Yabu about saturated fat. It’s unfairly demonised.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 26/05/2019 18:11

Soy is actually worse than palm oil in terms of devastating the environment yes no one bats an eyelid about it. Not to mention that over 90% of soy grown in the USA is GMO

clairemcnam · 26/05/2019 18:19

No soya oil is not worse for the environment s it is actually being grown in this planet. And COOK used to not use anything like this anyway. It used sunflower oil and butter.
And no unsaturated fat has not been unfairly demonised.

I'm afraid palm oil is in virtually everything - bread, cakes, biscuits, ready meals, nutella, shampoo and other toiletries, pizza... I could go on!

It is so hard to avoid! Going for sustainable palm oil is more attainable but if you wish to try to avoid it completely then I wish you luck.

Tigger001 · 26/05/2019 18:21

YANBU - I try to avoid palm oil as much as possible due to the devastation it causes. Some people just don't care if it saves them a few quid and for some people ignorance is bliss - (although no defence)

It is named so many different things also, which I think makes it difficult.

clairemcnam · 26/05/2019 18:27

I cook mainly from scratch so do manage to avoid most of it. But COOK had been my go to place for when I can not be bothered to cook, without having to read ingredients. Sadly that is no longer the case.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/05/2019 18:32

Oh that's awful Sad

Yet another place I can't buy food from

MeanMrMustardSeed · 26/05/2019 18:37

Very disappointing.

AdoraBell · 26/05/2019 18:44

YANBU OP

Have you tried any other companies? I cook mostly from scratch, not a boast, so have no clue about what companies like Cook et all use, but I would not use them because of the palm oil.

GenevaMaybe · 26/05/2019 18:47

Palm oil is the most commonly used oil on the planet. It has a variety of unique properties including being a highly economical crop to grow.
I think most companies will continue to use palm oil but will try to reduce the negative impacts of its cultivation on communities and the planet.

Lifeover · 26/05/2019 18:47

Op I’m equally as shocked I thought the whole point was they were practically equal to home cooked!

Mind you I’m not as shocked as I am about people’s continued ignorance and arrogance about the environment, probably the same people who drive suvs in the city, have 3 kids, think cheap airfares are great.
