Hi,

I was wondering if any Muslim mumsnetters could suggest a suitable Eid gift for my neighbours. They are a family with 3 children. Thanks

My colleague always chooses vegetarian when eating out to be sure of halal so sweets marked either halal or suitable for vegetarians would no doubt be very welcomed by the children. I think that anything you would give for Christmas or birthday bearing in mind a 'suitable for vegetarians' would be appreciated.

I've bought some dates and a diffuser if that helps. I know my colleague who's been fasting breaks her fast with a date so thought I'd start with that!! Smile

I used to buy boxes of good chocolates for my neighbours. Make sure they are suitable for vegetarians (no gelatine) and don't contain alcohol.

Teddybear45 · 26/05/2019 15:19

Hotel chocolate chocolates (the non-alcoholic ones)

noenergy · 26/05/2019 15:30

Yes as mentioned above suitable for vegetarians isn't enough, need to make sure there is no alcohol.

TheWernethWife · 26/05/2019 15:35

noenergy I did mention not containing alcohol in my post

TheQueef · 26/05/2019 15:39

Whatever they bought you for Xmas in a halal version.

SkintAsASkintThing · 26/05/2019 16:17

Sweets always go down well.

My DD used to be best friends with a girl who was Muslim, after years of spending a fortune on Amazon buying halal sweets I found out my corner shop which I use most days also sold loads of halal sweets, haribo etc at normal prices.

So if you have a good ethnic type shop that will be a good place to start.

I've bought family board games & flowers for my Muslim friends & that's gone down a treat. I stay clear of chocolates & treats because they get so much & end up donating half of it to the food bank. People who visit over the Ramadaan & Eid period give each other mainly food gifts as well so it's easy to get a pile up.

Fragrance candles, flowers, plants,

makingmammaries · 26/05/2019 16:43

I once brought a Muslim friend dates for Eid and she muttered something about how she’d been eating them all Ramadan

BogglesGoggles · 26/05/2019 16:45

For some reason when I was growing g up it was the done thing to gift soap and handkerchiefs but I’m not sure your neighbours would approve.

Notsosimple · 26/05/2019 18:44

Please don’t buy dates, as we eat them every single day during Ramadan, a board game, a tin of biscuits, sweets or chocolates for the kids would be nice (which are suitable for vegetarians) and a bunch of flowers for the mummy.

sergeilavrov · 26/05/2019 19:04

In the Middle East, we always tried to avoid dates like Notsosimple said, because they're so plentiful throughout the month. We often gave a nice basket of fresh baklawa or even make knafeh with some fresh kaak bread. My dh always made a bottle of syrup for them because he likes his knafeh even sweeter. Something homemade is always appreciated, and sweets are fun for children.

firawla · 26/05/2019 19:09

Another vote for not dates, it’s a nice guesture but we are honestly swimming in them every year and I’m sure other families will be the same? So I would say choc, biscuits etc preferable at Eid. The board game idea is also really thoughtful!

Shouldershrugger · 26/05/2019 19:36

Baklava is my go to.. or Indian sweets, rasgulla or rasmalai...

Shouldershrugger · 26/05/2019 19:37

Btw op, i think its very kind of you to give a gift

Doobydoo · 26/05/2019 19:43

Ambala is brilliant. Online shop....have a look.

Meangirls36 · 26/05/2019 20:13

Thank you for this thread. I was wondering the same myself. I work for a doctor who gave me a very generous present at Christmas and I've been desperately wondering what to buy him for Eid. Some great suggestions on this thread, thank you.

Mammylamb · 26/05/2019 23:38

Lovely! Thanks so much everyone for your feedback xx
