Peppa pig and the pub

tiredandnotfeelingveryblessed · 26/05/2019 13:16

I'm in our local, having a quiet pint with the OH. It's busy, it's Sunday lunch time and it's a popular place to have lunch, with or without children.

There's a family on the next table with a small child. Small child is watching Peppa pig on a mobile phone. I have four children so I am aware that keeping them entertained at the pub can prove difficult. But this child is watching at a very loud volume with no headphones.

Obviously I have no intention of saying anything - they look far tougher than me Grin But AIBU to be slightly aggrieved?

You're on your phone so I'd hardly say it's distracting you from a nice time with your OP.

Why is it always peppa pig?

I don’t care what families do to make a meal or other event doable BUT you should make an effort to ensure that doesn’t disrupt the enjoyment of others.

OpportunityKnocks · 26/05/2019 13:47

It could be worse. It could be 'baby shark' on repeat.

Buy no, yanbu

Moominfan · 26/05/2019 13:59

I entertain mine with spoons and colouring Biscuit gave myself one before anyone else does. Yanbu how are kids meant to learn good table manners if they're just plonked in front of a screen. Although on the flip side atleast it's just screen noise rather than screaming toddler. Every cloud and all

Whoops75 · 26/05/2019 14:06

YANBU

I was in the doctors waiting room this week and every child had a phone in front of them.No toys or books under their buggies they were like zombie babies.
See it in the supermarket too, makes me so sad 😞

hidinginthenightgarden · 26/05/2019 15:08

Being loud isn't great but other than that I see no issue. I would rather that than the kids running amok.

AbbyHammond · 26/05/2019 15:10

Just ask nicely for them to turn it down!

Ces6 · 26/05/2019 15:12

YANBU - it's very annoying. Even worse when you're with your own kids who are actually for once engaging in interesting conversation - and then someone nearby has a video and they lose all interest in talking to you!

GummyGoddess · 26/05/2019 15:13

Out of interest, would you prefer the parents to be singing? I rarely bring toys or books out with me, I just do action songs or recite the stories from memory. Is that more or less annoying?

Sometimes I'll bring dc1s cars if we're going out to eat, then we drive them around the table.

EmbarassingQuestion · 26/05/2019 15:13

I'd have a problem with the volume but not the watching. I have lots of friends who let their kids use their mobiles/ipads exclusively in waiting rooms/cars/restaurants/trains precisely so that they do not disturb other people. They are not glued to them all the time.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 26/05/2019 15:14

I was in the airport recently and a women walked past with a 3/4 year old in a buggy, the child had a tablet with Baby Shark booming out at full volume for all to hear, it was fucking awful! Everyone in the vicinity stopped to stare but she didn't seem to notice. She continued all the way from the check in /bag drop, through security and thank fuck got on a different plane to us, I still think of those poor people who flew with her!

Stefoscope · 26/05/2019 22:51

I don't get what's so difficult about using headphones. I don't work in a restaurant, but it's a place people go to socialise, not exactly toddler friendly. I've seen an increase in Dad's presumably being on babysitting duty for the day come in and just plonk their bored child in front of CBeebies whilst they socialise with their mates and ignore their poor child for hours. When I ask them to turn off the phone as it's loud and disturbing other customers, they have no alternative entertainment for their child.

Oh God. You're one of those parents...

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/05/2019 00:05

I thought that this was a thread about Peppa Pig going to the pub....

BusterGonad · 27/05/2019 00:09

I would have a massive problem with this. Simpletons imo. Why don't people realize that not everyone wants to hear that shit. I don't give a toss about kids using iPads but for the love of god use headphones or turn the sound off.

BusterGonad · 27/05/2019 00:10

Gummy if you started singing to your kids next to me in a pub in a Sunday I'd have you barred! Grin

BluebellCockleshell123 · 27/05/2019 00:35

This boils my piss. I've got no problem with screens (got 3 kids of my own and occasionally allow them to use them in restaurants. But my rule has always been no volume or headphones.

I can understand why you wouldn't you say anything though. I have previously very politely asked people to turn down their kids tablets before and been met with abuse.

Next time I'm going to ask the waiting staff if they can ask the offender to turn it down. And if they don't I'm going to play my own phone at high volume.

stucknoue · 27/05/2019 00:40

It's not the sound that annoys me it's the screens or rather the adults ignoring the child - far better they interact either by colouring or even playing an app together. Ok my kids never had them because they hadn't been invented but we spent meals interacting that's the point.

Trebla · 27/05/2019 03:33

Surely the supermarket is the only place it's acceptable? Jesus, it's that or online shopping whilst they weave hemp cloth play minecraft

BusterGonad · 27/05/2019 05:20

Stucknoue I have no problem with parents enjoying a meal out and allowing their child to play on iPads, we are with our son every second of everyday when he's not in school and if we want to enjoy a pub lunch together and chat like adults then I'll allow my son to play on his iPad. I don't see it as something to be judgmental about, but I do draw the line at invading other people's day with loud annoying noises. In fact I'd much rather most parents stuck their kids in front of an iPad then spoil my lunch with cheeky fuckers running about, bashing into my chair, shouting, crying and having tantrums.

golddustwomen · 27/05/2019 09:33

I don't see a problem with kids on phones/iPads in pubs or restaurants. We do it as it's the only way my 2 year will sit still through a meal, I never have the sound on though. We had it on our flight home not long ago, andys dinosaurs adventures thing on full blast for 4 hours. My dd was playing her iPad with no sound. Drove me insane!!

GummyGoddess · 27/05/2019 13:07

Grin Fair enough, I'll stop the singing!

BusterGonad · 27/05/2019 13:42

Gummy 😂

DarlingCoffee · 27/05/2019 16:37
