English planning laws have been changed so that larger home extensions can be built without planning permission.

"Temporary rules, which allowed bigger single-storey rear extensions without a full planning application, are being made permanent."

I see a lot of neighbour disputes being born.....

Everyone around our way has made use of these rules - big boom in contractors- neighbours mostly still seem to get a long. Maybe as sooo many people have done permitted developments or plan to. I think a balance is needed as planning departments have been cut so much.

yet another crap idea by those who don't live in terraced houses but have a detached house with space around it. total fuckers !

BogglesGoggles · 26/05/2019 16:43

I think it’s geeat! Houses in Britain are horribly small. People should be red to make their house more habitable without inecessary planning processes.

Gingernaut · 26/05/2019 16:44

I'm surrounded by terraced houses, but out and about, there's a lot of building work being done.

Large scale works and much of it not in keeping with the rest of the house.

Great idea. As someone else said, houses are small in this country and it would be cheaper than moving to a larger house

DGRossetti · 26/05/2019 17:01

I can't see the big housebuilding companies being impressed - if people can't be forced into moving how on earth can they keep property prices so high ?

Does anyone know if building control is also being relaxed ? Because it seems a bit silly to get rid of the need for planning permission, but still require the works to be up to quality. How else will cowboy builders be able to make an honest living ?

fecketyfeck21 · 26/05/2019 17:04

bogs conk oh yes, great idea, let's stick a massive extension on a 'little house' and really fuck over the neighbours. some builds are bloody selfish and people will take the piss, but as long as it's nimby eh?

Janleverton · 26/05/2019 17:05

Places too much responsibility on neighbours to object. What if they’re away/miss the letter are intimidated?

No objection = permitted. If an objection is received only then can thelocal authority consider the impact on light, outlook etc. 6m is very deep on a terrace, when you are thinking about the impact on unextended neighbours on either side (and 3m is the maximum normal depth without applying for planning permission or the householder prior approval for the massive extensions that’s now been made permanent).

Janleverton · 26/05/2019 17:09

I heard of a local authority where a disgruntled person submitted more than 900 of the householder prior approval applications, in 1cm increments, after the neighbour objected to the first and that objection was agreed with by the council. With a view to bamboozling the neighbour/council - for one of the applications to “slip through” without an objection. Think they used software to do it.

Plus councils don’t get any fee for administering them, which is costly if it then turns out there are objections, site visit needed, report, decision. All within a tight deadline. Councils not exactly brimming with money in current climate.
