To think that people don't use travellers cheques anymore

Are they outdated? Do people just use debit/credit cards or prepaid cards abroad? Tell me how you pay for things on holiday.

We have a Halifax credit card probably the Clarity that everyone has mentioned and also a Caxton FX card that we load up from our current account.

FWIW I worked in a bank a couple of years not long ago and we did indeed still have travellers cheques. I had to reconcile them every month!

I take a bit of cash but have a Caxton card. Preload with currency and use as a debit card at ATMs and shops abroad. You can top up with your phone if the cash runs out .
You still need a credit card for a lot of.hotels though

I.used to use my debit card at ATMs but they charge a lot foreign currency withdrawals. The Caxton card is cheaper

Didn't know you could still get travellers cheques. We use a combination of cash and a credit card that has no currency conversion fees. I prefer the latter as the exchange rate is better.

We have a Monzo card too! Fabulous.

Post office credit card which doesn't charge for foreign purchases. And a small amount of cash. I don't think I used traveller's cheques even back in the late 1990s/2000s when I did a lot of travelling.

Revolut

ByTheSea · 26/05/2019 08:45

I just got a Revolut card which we plan to use when abroad.

Last time I had them was around 2008. Nobody seemed to know what to do with them. We hadn't been abroad in maybe 6 or 7 years when they'd seemed normal.
Never bothered with them since.

Aragog · 26/05/2019 08:56

We just take some cash and use our cards a lot. We holiday a fair amount and it's never been n issue.

AnnaMagnani · 26/05/2019 09:13

Asked DH when he last used them - Interailing in 1993. He found them a massive pain in the arse and then met another guy Interailing who said 'look I've got this card from my bank which works in all the machines' and that was that.

Megan2018 · 26/05/2019 09:19

One of my current accounts and credit cards is specifically good for travel as no/low fees. We take a fair bit of cash and then withdraw more if needed. Use credit card to pay for meals/purchases where possible.
You need to check the charges though.
