To eat grass?

Please settle a dispute between me and DH!

Sitting in the garden, I started pulling out stems of grass from the lawn and nibbling the young tips.

DH looks at me as if I've gone completely mad and said I'm being weird.

AIBU? Surely this isn't a particularly unusual thing to do?

I was about to say no but I weirdly know what grass tastes like so I must have eaten it as a child and forgotten.

Inspired by this thread and a branch some twat has pulled off a tree I just tried willow bark to cure my headache. I got about three chews before I had to spit out it tasted so bad! I shall stick to grass.

Binglebong · 25/05/2019 19:54

Thank you iljkk. I shall try daisies when I next see some.

Smolo · 25/05/2019 19:57

I don't eat it now as can't help but think about dog wee etc. As a child I would often chew on a piece of grass. I also used to suck clover flowers which were so sweet.

ChocChocButtons · 25/05/2019 19:58

That’s grim :/ I mean wild animals do their toilet there probably.

I can report daisies are nice (on a dog walk as I mumsnet). Savoury and slightly woody.

It appears i shall survive come the zombie apocalypse! Grin

Perfectly normal. Not just the sweet fleshy young grass but also nothing nicer than to nibble on a stalk of hay, warmed in the sun.

Cryalot2 · 25/05/2019 21:48

Depends on the grass.
I remember we used to do it as a kid .

Wow just came back to this thread, glad so many other people do the same!

Also loving the foraging recipes and tips - I often put nettle in soups but haven't tried some of the others. Love the blanching dandelions trick! I've got some great contenders for that in my garden.

I remember doing this. I'm sure people did. It's like a tiny little leek inside, when you peel off the outer blade.

Cycling the kids to school this morning I saw the elderflower in blossom and thought of this thread. It's soon time to make elderflower pancakes. Here's the recipe for any other foragers. Make sure to leave your harvested blooms face down for a while to let any passengers crawl out Grin
