To tell you all about marriage allowance?

Posting here for maximum visibility, obvs I'm not BU at all! I found out about this from one of those pop up ads on FB and was all 'Oh yeah another PPI type nonsense' but when I looked into it on the gov.uk website it is totally legit. We had a couple of years where DH was earning very little, so he went online and applied to transfer the maximum unused allowance to me and I got a cheque for £440 from HMRC a couple of weeks later. He said it was really easy to do as well. Well worth it for anyone married where one party is SAH or earns under the threshold.

I did this also and received a lovely cheque for the backdating!

Unihorn · 25/05/2019 21:25

I did it and got a backdated cheque then 6 months later got told I owed pretty much the same amount in unpaid tax because I was in two maternity leaves spanning three tax years and had t paid enough tax in the first hear apparently. I still don't understand it but I'm still paying £18 a month back to them.

dirtystinkyrats · 25/05/2019 21:28

We've done it since it was first announced with no hassle at all. (But it might help that DH works in tax!)

KnittingForMittens · 25/05/2019 21:33

@gingajewel they have obviously got my tax code wrong. Should I call them up about this and get them to correct it?

Fragglesrooke · 25/05/2019 21:51

Currently can't apply as DH hasn't got passport, drivers licence or bank account so can't provide the id they need. He doesn't work but doesn't get any benefits so can't prove it that way either. Pain in the ***

KnittingForMittens · 25/05/2019 23:28

@Fragglesrooke how hasn't he got a bank account?! Has he ever worked?

Fragglesrooke · 26/05/2019 09:07

KnittingforMittens He was working when I met him up until our dd was born. One of those jobs with paper wage slip in envelope with cash wages. Before that he was in services and since then a sahd. I think he likes feeling like Jason Bourne Grin.

Thanks for this, OP.

I had heard about it a few months ago and then forgot all about it.

I've just applied online and we should be due a cheque for over £700.

Mind you, I'm going to triple check it's correct having read some of the posts on here.

If it's correct then it's going to pay towards a much needed family holiday.
