There's a bird living in my garden that's learned to imitate DD2

Honestly....it calls "Muuuuuum!" in DD's voice! It's got her Aussie accent and everything! We live in Australia but come from the UK....moved her 4 years ago.

I heard it and thought it was DD! Realised she wasn't calling me and there it was "Muuuuum!"

I don't know what bird it is. We have magpies which are very good at imitation locally....one on the news neighs like a horse.

I think this is clear evidence that DD calls me in that irritating way FAR too often! I've pointed it out to her as evidence of this. She's 11 and doesn't care.

Myna bird? Common pest in Australia and good at mimicking vocals.

Pinkkahori · 25/05/2019 13:16

That's hilarious. We have birds in the garden that I'm convinced have learned to imitate our cats!

Gth1234 · 25/05/2019 13:18

probably a blackbird. We still here trimphones in the garden.

I searched for "blackbird trimphone", and it came up with a link to a blackbird mimicking and ambulance.

That's amazing, you have to video it

Gth1234 · 25/05/2019 13:21

sorry about my typos.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/05/2019 13:24

Peaches I will definitely try!

Gt I don't think we have blackbirds in Australia. We have magpies which are excellent mimicks. Never seen a Mynah though....will google to see if they're resident in this part of Oz.

This is hilarious.

DonkeyHohtay · 25/05/2019 13:27

We have one round here - a long way from Aus - which sounds just like a car alarm.

Pinkruler · 25/05/2019 13:27

fabulous!

Tinkety · 25/05/2019 13:35

The Lyre bird? The chainsaw imitation is particularly impressive.

MrFlibblesEyes · 25/05/2019 13:38

Do you get tui birds in Australia? I know they come from New Zealand but I'm not sure how big the range is? They can imitate human voices exactly, it's quite freaky!

BringItIn · 25/05/2019 14:20

Starlings imitate other birds, noises such as phones and car alarms, and can be trained to mimic human language:

Nickpan · 25/05/2019 14:22

could be a galah

Nickpan · 25/05/2019 14:24

as common as pigeons are in uk

Soubriquet · 25/05/2019 14:24

Kookaburra?

I know they laugh a lot but not sure if it can mimic

heatherblue · 25/05/2019 14:27

There used to be a starling near us that imitated our kids' bicycle bells.

OKBobble · 25/05/2019 14:30

My sister's parrot learned to imitate her baby crying and then proceeded to drive her mad by doing so when the baby was asleep in the living room. She would be elsewhere a d have to come back to check only to find it was the bird!

Peacocking · 25/05/2019 14:52

The many many starlings living near a previous house of mine learnt to imitate lambs. It was like having a flock of sheep sitting on the roof from about 4am every day in the summer.

krustykittens · 25/05/2019 15:25

Peackcocking That is brilliant! I appreciate it must have driven you mad but the mental image has me giggling away!

Osirus · 25/05/2019 15:48

Very most likely a starling, they do this and can mimic a lot of different sounds.

Osirus · 25/05/2019 15:49

Sorry, just seen you’re in Australia, so not sure if you get starlings there?!

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2019 15:54

Fantastic 😂

I was in a pet shop that had a shop parrot that perfectly mimicked the telephone. I can imagine it’s hilarious for the customers and an absolute ball ache for the staff!
