To not be offended by Morrissey's face

Merseyrail are removing posters advertising Morrissey's new album. The poster is really just his face and the album details- nothing remotely controversial. They received a complaint that Morrissey's face offend a commuter this morning because he had right wing views and is a 'pseudo-racist', so immediately apologised for not vetting the posters better and agreed to take them down.

I think Morrissey is overrated, I think his political views on immigrants are wrong; but I just can't grasp the response to this.

AIBU to think the UK has gone nuts about perceived offence? Are we losing the freedom to hold unfashionable views one little chunk at a time? Of course companies can do what they wish, but was the threshold for social censorship always so low?

I loved Morrissey for many many years but not now. however if I have to put up with Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinsons face then some folk have a cheek moaning about an aging non relevant popstars face. Ridiculous

It's actually because most people here in Liverpool think he's a cunt, to be fair. Merseyrail are just doing the poster equivalent of what all our newsagents do with that shitrag of a 'paper', the S*n.

Pinkvoid · 24/05/2019 22:10

Ha, one of the strangest things I’ve heard this year.

I don’t like him as a person but his music is great. Think removing the posters purely because he has said some outrageous offensive things is a little something called censorship. How very fascist.

OldUnit · 24/05/2019 22:11

Milkshake would obscure that.

See, I think the Sun boycott is an example of the absolute best of activism- ordinary people collectively telling a big organisation to fuck itself. The Sun behaved appallingly, in a way which was directed at scousers, on the most sensitive topic and then kept doubling down.

It's actually because most people here in Liverpool think he's a cunt, to be fair.

I don't think that's just a Merseyside thing, but I don't think him being a cunt is enough. I think we have to stand up for the rights of cunts (and the right to call them such) or we lose ours. Perhaps I'm reading too much into one decision, but there seems a lot of this lately.

Why should we promote him when he chooses to promote racism and Islamophobia?

Anyone who promotes views that are divisive to humanity, that try to turn us against each other, deserves to be ignored

Bravelurker · 24/05/2019 23:05

It was only a couple of weeks ago that a famous commentator lost his job for a inappropriate tweet so why would this reaction this be any different?

Tixytrick · 24/05/2019 23:11

People get offended very easily nowadays.

rosenylund · 24/05/2019 23:51

Yes, well thank goodness some of the world are quick to be offended by bigoted shite.
