Do you let your DC stay up at the weekend/school holidays?

Hi all, we do like routine in this household. On school nights. DD nearly 4 is usually asleep by 7 and DS 8 is usually by 8. They are both up pretty early.

I would like it if they stayed up a little later at the weekend to do a few things particularly in the summer months with light evenings - walks, bike rides etc but Oh thinks we should stick to the same routine every night.

Oh is working late tonight. Took DC out for a bike ride at 7pm. Really enjoyed it!

I live in Spain and all kids stay up here. You won't find a child in bed before 10pm on a Friday or Saturday, most much later. It's common in many countries, just not the UK. Go for it! If the kids aren't cranky and lie in a bit the next day, then why not?

My lo stays up later on weekends and holidays (he's 3). He sleeps in to compensate the later nights so it suits everyone. If he didn't sleep in though I wouldn't do it - nothing is a worth a tired and grumpy child lol!

Routine goes out the window at weekends and holidays. We then settle back into routine when we go back to school and work.

It depends on how late. Staying up late on the weekends, but going back to regular hours during the week is not god for your body at any age- it is like giving yourself jet lag. However, an hour or so shouldn’t matter.

You’ll find out if this works tomorrow if they are exhausted and cranky.

Yes. It makes the weekend for them too.

Yes.

Depends on the children. Ours still rise early whatever time we put them to bed, plus we have an early-waking baby, so I'm not keen on late nights, as it just means we get no adult time. If they slept in, I'd love it.

Mine have always gone to bed late and woken up late at weekends and holidays-like me and DH! Works well for us and always has done.

I wish! My ds 7 is a nightmare the next day if he stays up to late

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 24/05/2019 20:44

I would also love to do this with dd age 6 but unfortunately she never lies on and gets up between 6.30/7.10am every morning.

She goes to bed at 7.30pm and asleep by 8pm but on weekends she generally goes up at 8pm and asleep by 8.:30pm

There are occasions at least once a month were she’s not in bed until about 10pm if we are at a party etc and she’s still up at the crack of dawn 🙄

Yeah I don't bother too much with routine on weekends and holidays.

Ds 5 sleeps in pretty well so is all fine for him to be up a bit later.

Dd10 loves to stay up late if she can but unfortunately is never able to lie in (even though she has the only west facing room!). That's fine for me as she's old enough not to wake me but for her own sake I have to make sure she sometimes goes to bed early.

Mine are older and have an extra hour on weekends and holidays - this started when they were about 7 or 8 I think (obviously the time they go to bed has gotten later as they have gotten older too!). So now they go to bed at 9.30 school nights and 10.30 on weekends/holidays.
