To ask how to dress my bridesmaids??

Hp737 · 24/05/2019 12:49

Can anyone suggest how to dress two bridesmaids with very different body shapes? One - #1- is tall (5‘9”) size 20 with big boobs, one- #2- is petite (5’4”) and a size 8. #1 lives abroad so can’t attend fittings etc. A lot of mainstream lines only go up to size 16/18 and I know #1 wants to cover her arms and wear a decent bra, so a lot of the ones I would have liked for my #2 are out. I want them both to feel comfortable and confident.
Any suggestions?

ASOS have a lovely range of bridesmaid dresses in a very wide range of heights and sizes, with the same colour in several different styles. Your overseas bridesmaid could order directly. Or if she will be in the UK before the wedding you could time an order to coincide and order a few as its free returns

MrsFionaCharming · 24/05/2019 13:43

If you get a paint colour strip, you could give one to each bridesmaid and she can pick a dress on that colour scale that suits her?

Lyricallie · 24/05/2019 13:53

I have a similar issue. ASOS have the same dresses in petite, plus, tall, maternity and general. So I'm probably going to be doing that.v

AlbusPercival · 24/05/2019 13:56

I am a bridesmaid at a wedding tomorrow with basically same issues. We all have different dresses in same fabric from JJs house

Pinkyyy · 24/05/2019 13:59

For their sake, I'd do two different dresses in the same colour. I can't imagine the size 20 BM would feel all that comfortable next to the size 8 BM, if they are both in the same dress.

MoreCuddlesForMummy · 24/05/2019 14:07

How about a multi-way dress? We had lovely ones from In One Clothing and I’d have kept mine if it wasn’t a maternity one. Other bridesmaid wore it differently to me but we were very clearly the bridesmaids.

If you had 5/6 bridesmaids I’d maybe say go for a colour theme, but for two I think it would be wise to have them the same colour.

You have several options:

Same dress and colour in appropriate sizes but have alterations made to suit the bm who wants sleeves etc - with most styles this is achievable.

Same dress and colour with the addition of a matching stole/wrap or bolero to allow taller bm to be more comfortable. There really are some gorgeous wraps/boleros around. Or you could even have wraps/boleros made to your specifications (fairly reasonable price wise to do this)

Same colour from same designer/retailer but different styles. Most large bridal wear companies have a wide variety of styles usually available within the same colour range as they buy fabric in bulk.

Multiway dress and colour. These are essentially the same dress but the way it's worn can be altered

But the fabric for them to then gave dresses made up to suit.

Ask them to each buy a dress in the colour and fabric specified (different fabrics mean the way the light catches changes the colour appearance) best way to achieve this is to send them a swatch of the fabric to match to.

Let them wear lovely dresses regardless of colour/style matching - it's not a law that they have to match.

There are a LOT of places which sell clothes that include sizes 8-20.

Here's all the dresses at Debenhams labelled for Bridesmaid in size 20. I haven't checked, but I'd assume most are also available in size 8.

bridgetreilly · 24/05/2019 16:14

This would be very pretty and comes in sizes 6-24.

Or this in sizes 6-20.

SmellMySmellbow · 24/05/2019 16:15

Give them a colour palette to work from and let them pick their own. I've never got the whole uniform thing and it's much nicer for them to spend the day in something they feel confident in. (Plus saved me a load of cash)

bridgetreilly · 24/05/2019 16:16

Jenny Packham dress in 8-24.

kidsmakesomuchwashing · 24/05/2019 16:24

lonelyatchristmas · 24/05/2019 16:26

These multi-way dresses could work for both? There are various colours. XL I believe is size 18-20.

Barkette · 24/05/2019 16:37

The Multi-way bridesmaid dresses from Debenhams are really good. I had a similar issue with my bridesmaids. We agreed on a colour and one wore hers kimono style so it gave her arms coverage and the other one wore hers one way with both straps during the day and then changed the straps for a cross back in the evening. They both looked really good. Debenhams are great as you can also buy online and return items too.

CurbsideProphet · 24/05/2019 16:39

My bridesmaids will be wearing completely different dresses. It was too much like hard work to find a dress that suits both of them. Dorothy Perkins bridesmaid dresses in the recent online sale. Job done Grin

AngeloMysterioso · 24/05/2019 16:42

I took mine to David’s Bridal, showed them the colour/fabric and length and then they got whatever they wanted. They all had something different and they all looked lovely!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 24/05/2019 16:42

My maid of honour was 5 foot, with huge boobs, I ordered the dresses from JJs house and the measurements/fit were perfect, I ordered he's first and or was so good I ordered an the BM dresses from there too. Get fabric swatches first and give them half a dozen or more options of dress style and get the different dresses made in the same fabric. They weren't expensive either.

H2OH20Everywhere · 24/05/2019 16:46

You'll never get matching colours if #1 is abroad. Even if she goes to the same shop there could be variation in batch colour.

What about choose two colours, say blue and green. Each finds a suitable dress in their colour, and also finds accessories to match of their dress. But then they swop accessories, so that the one in the blue dress has a green bolero, and the one in the green has blue. You could then have both the colours in your bouquet.

I think that could look really effective. I wouldn't give them complete rein with dresses, try and see a photo before they buy so that you know they're not too disimilar. And agree an accessory beforehand, so at least they have something the same. (What would be perfect would be if each could get some extra material from their dress, and then get something made up, but that may be too difficult.)

MissB83 · 24/05/2019 17:06

I was recently a bridesmaid. I'm 5'10 and a size 20 with big boobs. Other bridesmaids were shorter, about 5'5/5'6 and very slim. The bride picked three different styles (long) to suit each of us in an identical shade. They were made by JJs House which is a company that makes to order in the Us based on measurements. The dresses did fit pretty well and it looked fine on the day!

DeRigueurMortis · 24/05/2019 17:18

There are websites now that offer bridesmaids dresses in the same fabric but different styles.

https://www.davidsbridal.co.uk/ContentStyleandFashionGuidee_mismatcheddifferentcolorbridesmaiddressesideas#

This might help.

I'd suggest you choose a colour and then ask each bridesmaid to choose their own style.

Personally I think it looks really classy.

It's obvious they are bridesmaids but no-one has to suffer the indignity of being in a dress that's unflattering.

Purpleartichoke · 24/05/2019 17:33

There are tons of bridesmaid dress lines that offer different styles in the same fabric.

SmallPinkBear · 24/05/2019 17:46

My bridesmaids had 2birds multi-way dresses. They come in lots of colours and can be worn in different ways. I think M&S did a similar version too...

MsSquiz · 24/05/2019 17:56

I had the multi-way dresses from Debenhams, I think they were £100 each and they worked for my 5 bridesmaids of varying heights and sizes
