To not know what to do with one child on a rainy day!

We're going on holiday tomorrow. Air bnb type thing, so no hotel style facilities, just a paddling pool. Only it's forecast to rain most of the week we're there!

DD is 6 and I cannot think what to do with her on the rainy days. We'll take some paints and paper, and we can go out for something to eat, but you can't eat all day! We might also do some baking or something in the house, but there are no kids' facilities nearby. We just kind of assumed it would be sunny and all our planned activities revolved around being outside!

Go outside anyway. Just take waterproof clothes. Unless it's really cold, it can still be fun to go on walks, visit beaches/castles/forests/villages, etc.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 24/05/2019 12:23

Baking/decorate cupcakes
Make playdough/play with it
Colouring in books
Movie
Go out in the rain. You won't melt.

wholelyunimpressed · 24/05/2019 12:23

Is it in the UK?
This is why I always book accommodation with an indoor pool.

Lifeover · 24/05/2019 12:24

take wellies and waterproofs, walk on beach/through woods, followed by hot chocolate in a nice café - stuff of my childhood holidays

rosybell · 24/05/2019 12:24

Yes - I agree , just get out and about. The beach can be great in the rain. It probably wont rain all day every day anyway. Any cinema's or museums nearby?

helpconfused · 24/05/2019 12:25

Wellies and spare clothes! We go out in any weather exploring

Cloudtree · 24/05/2019 12:26

movie, board games, card games, charades, nature walk in the rain,

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 24/05/2019 12:27

Where are you going? People might have suggestions. But go out anyway, take hot chocolate so go out on adventures then go back to the house and cuddle up with hot chocolate. Go to museums, local swimming pool, if in UK look at local facebook pages for half term activities you might not know about at libraries etc.

Xmasbaby11 · 24/05/2019 12:28

Swim at local leisure centre. We'd go at least 3 times a week if rainy. A swim and cafe visit takes up a good chunk of the day.

Roller skating or ice skating if you're near a city.

Cinema one morning.

Playcentres, museums, other attractions?

It probably won't rain constantly so just get out when you can.

adaline · 24/05/2019 12:31

Go out anyway - you can't just stay indoors all week because it's raining!

Pack waterproofs and get outdoors. Go to the beach or for a walk in the woods. Go to the park and feed the ducks. Go to a nice cafe and have cake and hot chocolate.

No need to stay in and get cabin fever.

herculepoirot2 · 24/05/2019 12:33

Couldn’t stay indoors all day because of rain on holiday!

DoNotDisturbPlease · 24/05/2019 12:35

Wtf come on in. Go out anyway!! Its not acid rain.

AdaColeman · 24/05/2019 12:45

Take some card games, cat's cradle, small craft kits (eg beads for bracelets) or some wool & knitting needles and teach her to knit, or jigsaw puzzles.

Or go out in the rain!
Take a flask of hot soup with you.

UnicornBrexit · 24/05/2019 12:53

All those messy things in someone elses house ?

chipsnmayo · 24/05/2019 12:56

Surely if you live in the UK you have some experience entertaining on rainy days Grin

I have some great memories / photos of my DD splashing about in her wellies in the pouring rain at a beach in Skeggy !

speedbird55 · 24/05/2019 12:58

Cinema
Jigsaw
Dvd
Cooking
Local indoor sights ie castle museum etc

Clean123 · 24/05/2019 12:59

You may have to go out in the rain, i know this sounds awful but I wouldn't have paid to stay somewhere to do stuff you can do at home like painting and baking etc whats the point in going away. I know you were planning on it being sunny, just go and do the usual things you had planned anyway

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 24/05/2019 13:01

Playdough isn't at all messy to make, neither are cupcakes.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/05/2019 13:08

Treasure hunt around the house? You can look up/print some clues.

alligatorsmile · 24/05/2019 13:53

Wellies and go out anyway sounds good - we are in the middle of no-where in Italy, so can go tramping about the lovely countryside.

Treasure hunt is a great idea!

Just a word on waterproofs with a 6yo if she doesn't usually have them: years ago we visited friends in Norway and we put all the DC in waterproofs to go for a walk in the rain on the beach. My DC (2 and 7) went running into the (freezing) sea with their wellies on as they presumed (we realized afterwards) that waterproof was the same as wet suit!

alligatorsmile · 24/05/2019 14:01

If we were at home we'd stick on a film or something but I don't know if they have a DVD player there

I agree with others. Just get out and about anyway.
When we had a break in Wales with awful heavy rain, we found a nearby castle and mines to explore.
