Car dealers using residential roads to store cars -AIBU?

We live in a terrace on a residential street. Parking outside the house is a challenge anyway as our neighbouring properties all have two vehicles but we just about squeeze in. We have twin toddlers, both with ASD and one has other disabilities, so not being able to park close by is a real pain.

A week ago someone parked a brand new car outside our house, and parked it in such a position that we can’t park as many cars on that stretch. I figured eventually they’d move it and DH could move his car back, and we could all go back to squeezing in.

Except the car hasn’t moved and the inside is pristine with nothing in it.

Having looked online it seems car dealerships are dumping cars on residential streets when they don’t have space on their lots. I suspect that’s what’s happening.

AIBU or is this bloody annoying? Yeah, I know, on street parking can be used by anyone, but if this is the case I think it’s massively taking the piss!

Do you live near a car dealership? But if a stretch to assume that’s what’s happening. If you do, maybe go and ask. I agree it’s a piss take. As a side note, could you apply to the council to have a disabled bay placed outside your home?

Mari50 · 24/05/2019 08:58

Are they really parking brand new cars on residential streets? Id be more concerned that it’s a stolen car and has been dumped to see if it has a tracker on it than thinking it’s a dealership car. The chances of a car getting dings etc on a residential street are probably quite high so I’d expect them to park the crappier cars there...

LakieLady · 24/05/2019 09:00

It's cheeky fuckerism, for sure, but if the cars are taxed and MOT'd,it's not illegal and I don't think there's anything you can do about it.

I'd certainly report any that don't have tax or MOT though.

GruciusMalfoy · 24/05/2019 09:04

I'd be really surprised that they're risking parking brand new cars where they could be damaged easily!

AlwaysCheddar · 24/05/2019 09:05

Why not be caring and share some (lots) of your junk mail and leave it under their windscreen wiper....

SinkGirl · 24/05/2019 09:05

We can’t get blue badges yet (the boys are only 2.5 and wouldn’t qualify for higher rate mobility at 3, and here you need that to get a blue badge - apparently blue badges will be available from this year for people with ASD but it’s not available yet as far as I can tell). If we can get a blue badge then I definitely will.

There at least six car dealerships within a mile of our house, some with very limited forecourt space. There was a story in the local paper recently about dealerships doing this so I don’t think it’s a stretch. It’s new this year, it literally hasn’t moved for a week and it has literally no belongings visible inside it. It doesn’t belong to anyone in our stretch of terrraces (we’ve asked)

Unfortunately the car isn’t listed anywhere online yet so I can’t find out if it belongs to a company but will keep checking.

Are you not entitled to a disabled bay if your children are disabled? My neighbour did that for a reason similar to this. It is a disabled bay in general so anyone with a blue badge could park there but no one has so far except her.

Sorry x posted

SinkGirl · 24/05/2019 09:08

No, sadly it’s not illegal - just deeply annoying.

This is the next town over from us

Call the police and report it as abandoned. Either it’s stolen and dumped and the owner will be grateful to see it returned or it’s a dealership car and the police will have a word.

EssentialHummus · 24/05/2019 09:09

We have this near us. If it gets out of control a bit of judiciously placed bird seed can help.

RHTawneyonabus · 24/05/2019 09:10

Well I know for certain that the local dealership does this near us. They use the four hour free parking spaces and switch them round twice a day. It drives me mad as parking is very limited. However it’s not illegal so there’s nothing to be done

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/05/2019 09:11

It would be such a shame if the birds who use your feeder were to poo on it.

You do have a strategically situated feeder, and sadly you cannot move it.

19lottie82 · 24/05/2019 09:11

Seems a bit odd. I work in the motor trade and sellers don’t generally insure and tax cars they are selling (why would they? They just use trade plates when taking them out). And they would run the risk of the car being damaged.

SinkGirl · 24/05/2019 09:11

Might try that Hummus Grin

I may contact the police and say I’m concerned it’s stolen. It’s very weird to see a car that’s obviously new not move at all for a week (DH works from home and has been patiently waiting for it to move so he can move his car back!)

It seems odd for a car dealership to stash a brand new car on a residential street, you’d think they’d be worried about it getting dinged or stolen. I’d have thought they’d be doing that with the used cars rather than the new ones. Don’t the car dealerships near you sell secondhand cars?
I’d agree it’s taking the piss if it is a car dealership though.

I’d also check whether it’s taxed etc and report it if not.

drinkygin · 24/05/2019 09:13

Yes check online for tax and insurance and report to the police if none.
Failing that...birdseed all never the car and junk mail under the wipers Grin

SavingSpaces2019 · 24/05/2019 09:33

If the cars were getting damaged they'd stop parking them there.....

NewName54321 · 24/05/2019 10:04

Report it as abandoned.

If not stolen and dumped, or from a dealership, are you near enough to an airport for it to be a dodgy "meet & greet" parking service using the streets instead of a secure car park?

bellabasset · 24/05/2019 10:17

Is there a dealership listed on the number plate that might give you a clue to whom it belongs?

Schuyler · 24/05/2019 10:18

Some local authorities only allow higher rate mobility claimants to receive blue badges but many have a discretionary application process. Is this available in your area?

Btw a local company park their names hire cars in a street nearish me and the residents go mad. YANBU.
