To take my daughter to the doctor

I'm really in two minds with whether I should take my LG to the doctor today. She's 13 months old and I suspect that she has croup but it isn't so severe she is struggling to breathe. The cough sounds very painful and she often cries out in pain each time she coughs (which is a lot), her voice is hoarse and she is wheezing a little when she breaths in. She really struggled last night and was up constantly with it. Other than that she does seem ok in herself but I just don't want it to go untreated and get worse. I also had to take her to the doctors on Tuesday because she had a measles rash from her jabs and her nursery wouldn't take her without a doctors note to say she wasn't contagious. I'm paranoid the gp with think I'm just being a paranoid mum (which I know I am sometimes) and not take me seriously now or in the future. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and taken there little one to the doctors or not as the case my be? Opinions please!

She's 13 months old she's ill and you're worried of course you should take her the doctors.

Fairylea · 24/05/2019 08:03

Definitely take her.

guiltynetter · 24/05/2019 08:04

yes take her. she's so little and obviously ill.

My dd had croup recently. She was seriously struggling to breathe so we took her to a and e. They gave her one dose of steroid which cleared it up. So yes I'd go to the gp.

janetforpresident · 24/05/2019 08:07

Agree with others my dd (19months) had croup. They gave steroids and the nurse said always come in with croup.

EleanorReally · 24/05/2019 08:10

popsadaisy · 24/05/2019 08:11

"and she is wheezing a little when she breaths in."

No doctor would refuse to see her with this ^^. Just make sure that you stress to the receptionist that she is struggling to breathe. DD has had croup several times, and we have ended up in A and E more than once with it.

YeOldeTrout · 24/05/2019 08:18

Take her.
I never say take her, btw (!)
Just go thru your steps to keep the cough manageable & see if GP can add anything or advise differently. Then you'll know you're doing everything you can.

EugenesAxe · 24/05/2019 08:19

Oh yeah definitely take her. At that age children can go downhill really quickly; agree that wheezing would be my concern.

EllenRachel · 24/05/2019 08:42

Definitely take her, i would also see if it is sucking in under her ribs when she breathes in and take her to hospital if it is.

crispysausagerolls · 24/05/2019 08:56

ALWAYS go with croup! Will give steroids and she will be fine

popsadaisy · 24/05/2019 09:23

Just to update you all I've taken her, managed to get an appointment for 8.50am. It was the same doctor we saw on Tuesday and he was very kind and gave her three days worth of steroids. Thank you all for your advice! I feel a lot better now. Fingers crossed these steroids will do the trick!!

I'm glad you took her. Poor little thing. Doctors would always prefer that you took a baby to see them rather than worrying that because you went a few days ago you can't go again for something different. I always used to think 'Will this get better in a couple of days by itself? Could it compromise someone else's health if I take them to sit in a GP's waiting room ?(chemo patient, etc). If the child has a rash and you know all her friends have chicken pox, is there any point in going to the GP to be told it's chicken pox? Can I try Calpol and see what happens?
I would always take the child if I suspected a chest or ear infection, and would ring to ask for advise for a very high temperature/ obviously very sick child with no obvious cause.

I had to take my lo after 10 pm to out of hours, the night air did help but the doctor did say with croup there was a worry of epiglottis and did Not mind seeing her at all
glad you were seen.
