To ask about gabapentin and nerve pain/sciatica success stories?

After nearly 3 months of sciatic pain, (it's bad, I need a stick to be able to walk, well shuffle really) and many different drugs, (codiene, amitriptyline, diazepam) my GP has prescribed gabapentin. I am seeing a physio who has made an appointment for a second opinion as to whether it needs further invstigation, (eg. steroid injections or material removed).

Has this worked for anyone? please someone tell me it works

I'm noting down all the other drugs mentioned, just in case. Didn't think to ask for Naproxen. Isn't that very similar to ibuprofen though?

I was on gabapentin when I had sciatica. Nothing touched it and I could hardly walk for 6 months.
It took away the huge 'electric current' that ran down my leg from my hip but it didn't take the pain away.
I was on 1200 I think. As well as tramadol, diazepam and naproxen.

I didn't like the side effects I was totally spaced out and had terrible mood swings and rages.
Luckily the sciatica eased on its own

Pringlemunchers · 24/05/2019 09:06

A word of warning it made my vision blurry. I took and about an hour later I couldn't see !!! It can be one of the side effects.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 24/05/2019 09:07

I’m on 1200g a day (herniated disc pressing on spinal cord). It deals with the pain. I still get pins and needles and my leg goes cold at random moments. Increasing the dose does stop this but also sends me loopy (mind racing, like I’ve had waaay too much caffeine!).

Not sure if I get side effects. I have brain fog and tiredness but I’m 47 so not necessarily gonna blame the gabapentin!

I was like a zombie for about 2 weeks when I started it. But I was so happy not to be in pain, and then the zombie-ness wore off.

GruciusMalfoy · 24/05/2019 09:10

I haven't had it, as I've only had short (few weeks) spells of sciatica, but I truly hope it works for you. I don't think people understand the pain until they've gone through an acute bout of it.

Diazepam and cocodamol were less than useless for me in the latest episode. Naproxen only slightly better. I'm waiting to see physio now, and praying it doesn't return soon.

IHateUncleJamie · 24/05/2019 09:18

Pregabalin (Lyrica) worked better for me than Gabapentin which I was on for 5 years. I just felt like a zombie on Gabapentin and it wasn’t as effective for the pain as I’d hoped.

Had to stop Lyrica because it gave me chest pains but it was very good - I took it during the day with Amitryptiline at night and that was a good combo.

If Gabapentin makes you feel too dopey then ask to try Pregabalin.

TENS and Pilates really help, as does a decent Physio.

Tigger365 · 24/05/2019 09:19

I’ve been on it since I was 14 for trigeminal neuralgia. I’ve just switched to pregabalin because it seems to work better for other conditions, and you can’t have both together 🙄
I’ve also taken it with tegretol and an array of other opioids but hand on heart, gabapentin allowed me to live my life (mostly) for the last 16 years.

I will reiterate PP with side effects, it can have some strange ones lol

PookieDo · 24/05/2019 09:21

It didn’t help the only thing that worked was the spinal injection
My disc was ruptured and physio drugs etc did nothing to help. I was on crutches like you

PookieDo · 24/05/2019 09:22

And I felt like I was very very drunk on gabapentin I think I ended up on 4000mg

SinisterBumFacedCat · 24/05/2019 09:31

Pregabalin stopped me sleeping, which made my pain worse. Same with Duloxatine only that also robbed me of my appetite, irritated my bladder and made me feel hyper and exhausted, it left me bedridden. Gabapentine only makes occasionally constipated.

PookieDo · 24/05/2019 09:32

Sorry was posting from the loo!
When mine went I had a lot of stiffness creeping up on me but was manageable. I went away for a weekend and realised I couldn’t really stand still, I either had to sit or walk around.

I can’t remember exactly what happened but suddenly I was unable to stand up straight. The pain was mostly coming from my buttock and my whole leg and foot pulsed, twitched (toes moving around wildly), I couldn’t lie down or sit down or stand up so I was all hunched and limping. Saw a GP who got me on gabapentin and diazepam, referred me to a physio who took one look at my posture and said this is a disc so all they did was accupunture and gentle movement exercises. They gave me crutches so that my hunched walk would improve as it was the only way I could stand up straight. I got referred to a pain clinic after about 6 weeks of no sleep (I had started to go a bit mad with that) and I finally got an MRI after 10 weeks and then at 14 weeks got the injection. The moment I had the injection it took all my pain away instantly. I haven’t had to take any painkillers or have anything else since!
It will go again one day though as this is the 2nd time

SpamChaudFroid · 24/05/2019 18:13

Your bout of sciatica sounds similar to mine PookieDo. The only way I can move about without the crutch is by hunching over to the right and bending my knees! Oddly the most comfy position for me right now (apart from lying down) is the lotus position. It's the walking shambling that's causing the problem. Thank fuck it's not keeping me awake at night like some of you. If anything I'm sleeping more because pain is tiring, shambling about is tiring and I'm getting a touch of the blues due to being less mobile for so long. (I tend to sleep more when depressed.)

Thanks everyone who's posted - I was beginning to feel so very despondent about it all and I'm taking heart from all the success stories!

For those on amitrityline, does the dry mouth get any better? My mouth feels like it's been coated in anti-perspirent.

Physical therapy cured my sciatica

Bravelurker · 24/05/2019 18:40

I was in chronic pain for 4 months and in the end I was sent to my work to A and E. This was after 5 tearful trips to the doctors, 3 physio appointments and my work changing my work station, such as desk /chair /keyboard.

I loved exercising and cycling everywhere and it used to help until it didn't.
Nothing helped, lying down, sitting, standing or moving.

The final straw was when I realised that this could go on forever and I broke down and was promptly sent to hospital.

The medication changed my life and I have had no side effects but to be honest, I don't care if it turned me into a werewolf.

Bravelurker · 24/05/2019 18:43

I was angry that I had to endure so much pain and my doctor knew I was on the edge and it took some rude A and E doctor to help me. I literally owe him my life

daisypond · 24/05/2019 18:57

Those of you with crutches or sticks , did you get your own or were you given them? I am in such pain with sciatica and have been off work all week and signed off for more. But I will have to get back to work. I’ve got a long commute on public transport which brings me to tears even on a good day. I was thinking a stick might stop people bumping into me etc- I travel by tube and bus. And will maybe help with my slow shuffling.

MsJudgemental · 24/05/2019 19:01

Have you tried a chiropractor? It's worked for me.

PookieDo · 24/05/2019 20:43

I was given crutches by an NHS physio. They measured them on me and made them the right height with the arm handle part? I think this is important

They said I was causing more damage to my back with the hunched walking and lying down wasn’t going to keep me mobile and limber enough - need to keep moving

I honestly think I had some PTSD from the level of pain that it inflicted on me, I was very depressed and isolated for months, I could think of nothing else but pain. I even thought about necking a load of pills during the worst hours and hours awake. I slept half sitting up on the sofa for about 3 months

daisypond · 24/05/2019 21:02

I’m on Naproxen, Cocodamol and Amitritiline now but was on Diazepam and Tramadol earlier. Is Gabapentine worth asking for? I’m desperate. This has been going on for five months. I start hydrotherapy with the NHS next week. I’ve seen an osteopath twice but am not convinced it’s helping.

PookieDo · 25/05/2019 07:57

Gabapentin works on the nerve pain but it’s not a painkiller I think it can block the signal (don’t quote me but I think that is what it does)
So for me I am asthmatic and lots of NSAID’s are not a good idea, also painkillers didn’t work either and you could possibly come off them as much
But it has its own side effects and takes some getting used to

SpamChaudFroid · 25/05/2019 11:47

daisypond I was thinking a stick might stop people bumping into me etc-

That's exactly what I thought! However, I was so, so wrong. I'm already at that "cloak of invisibility age", but adding a stick into the equation makes you even more so! I'm so worried that someone's foot's gonna get caught in it, and it kicked from under me! I was so fuming the first few times I used it outside I nearly began a thread on here about that very thing.

But your question about the stick, my physio gave it to me. He adjusted the height, but the rule of thumb is that arms by sides, the very top edge of the stick should come to your wristbone.

Bravelurker your GP sounds fucking terrible! Can you change to a different one? Mine is horrible too, I only saw him a few times and the man was appalling, so when I make an appointment now I just ask for the GP who is bloody awesome. I only make appointments with her. I think men (sorry) can be a bit dismissive of women's pain, (man flu etc.).

I felt a bit woolly headed this morning(3rd day, low dose), but after a couple of ibuprofen and coffee it's gone. I don't feel like their's any difference in pain yet, but the NHS website does say a couple of weeks. And I'll still continue with the ibuprofen and paracetomol (codeine did nothing). I might use this thread as a kind of diary to keep track of any difference in pain, because it's quite difficult to quantify as one painful day blurs into the next and trying to work out if the pain's any better than it was last week. It will probably mostly be me rambling to myself, but anyone who wishes their sciatic nerve would stfu is welcome. Smile

daisypond, do ask your GP about gabapentine, there seems to be too many success stories on here not to. No-one should have to live their lives in agonising pain.

I have had a recent flare up of sciatica was taking morphine, naproxen, and paracetamol which didn't touch it. An A&E doctor advised take amitriptyline for at least two weeks (it needs to build up) and you won't need any other drugs. She was right after nearly a month pain is gone (just numbness & tingling left). Osteo helped enormously and I am considering IDD Therapy - has anyone tried this?

flowersinthebedroom · 25/05/2019 12:26

Gabapentin worked for the pain for a while but made me suicidal,so I had to come off it. I'm currently on 60mg of duloxetine which is working well.

YesQueen · 25/05/2019 12:38

Didn't work for me. I was on paracetamol, naproxen, dihydrocodiene, diazepam and morphine
I had to have emergency surgery and now just take one codeine and one naproxen at night, my leg pain is gone but I have back pain still as they said the surgery isn't for the back pain, it was to stop me being paralysed hence the emergency bit
