To ask if you were a doctor (assuming you're not already)...

...what would your speciality be?

I'd be torn between gynaecology to help the maximum number of women that I could (not least because we've been second class in so many areas of healthcare over the years) or endocrinology because it sounds fascinating and based on what little I know of it, it seems to be linked to so many other issues - it feels like we're still scratching the surface of what we know about hormones and their impact on various conditions.

(This is a very random musing - I have no medical connections at all, other than as a patient!)

GP. I’d love the variety and problem solving. I also know I really enjoy the clinic environment (work in GP surgeries as a community midwife and ironically would hate to do O&G).

Herland · 23/05/2019 19:00

.... But I also want to be Dr. House and be a shit hot diagnostics expert.

Shimy · 23/05/2019 19:01

Paediatric neurologist. There’s too few of them and more research needs to be done abuses, treatment and medication.

iklboo · 23/05/2019 19:02

So....how badly do cracked ribs hurt? Asking for me a friend Grin

Shimy · 23/05/2019 19:05

“Into” not abuses 🙄

YouBumder · 23/05/2019 19:07

Anaesthesia

TheTrollFairy · 23/05/2019 19:10

Probably a surgeon (I would be fully booked with just my family if I was) if not that then I think maybe the people who do autopsies because then I can’t really do anything which would be the cause of someone’s death (that would be my fear being a dr of some sort)

Kukumbr · 23/05/2019 19:10

Either Gastro or Colorectal. Fascinating!!

YoungAmerican · 23/05/2019 19:19

I am a doctor and I still don't know what to specialise in. So far anaesthetics is the winner but my main objective is to never, ever, be the medic on call, which all the 'ology' professions would involve years of

DryHeave · 23/05/2019 19:19

Radiology. Sitting at home in my pants reporting.

hazell42 · 23/05/2019 19:20

Paleontologist
What do you mean, that's not a real doctor?

YoungAmerican · 23/05/2019 19:23

Ah! Radiology is a good call. Run through training, reporting in pants (is that only consultants?) er, interventional super wizardry, and stuff nobody else has a clue about.

DryHeave · 23/05/2019 19:26

Does that make me a radiology recruiter then?

SarahBeeney · 23/05/2019 22:24

Anaesthetics for me.

LaMarschallin · 23/05/2019 22:29

What do you mean, that's not a real doctor?
Smile

emummy · 23/05/2019 22:36

A&E is the best. Anaesthetics was fun but doing the same lists every week would bore me to tears.

Poshjock · 23/05/2019 23:13

I’m fascinated be the heart so cardiology for me. I’m also happy to work with feet so podiatry and biomechanics would be my fall back. Definitely not eyes. They’re my kryptonite.

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/05/2019 23:18

Hypermobility syndrome disorders. So much ignorance in the medical field.. there is even a scientific study saying how patients find this and another about how undiagnosed it is.

Only 1 person has mentioned my specialtySmile

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/05/2019 23:24

Under diagnosed.

Obviously the connective tissue in my brain has gone saggy...

HollaHolla · 23/05/2019 23:26

A&E or Neurosurgery. I’ve had a number of neurosurgies, and I’ve experienced brilliant, or awful, consultants. I’d really like to make a difference to people like me.
If I’d have been bright enough, I always wanted to be a medic. In real life, I’m something VERY different.

PurpleWithRed · 23/05/2019 23:30

I’ve always had a hankering for being an arsey a&e nurse bullying inexperienced ambulance crews and f1s and being an angel to patients. That or pathology.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 23/05/2019 23:30

Immunologist. I find the immune system fascinating!

Blobbyweeble · 23/05/2019 23:33

ED/Trauma. I’m a paramedic so get to see them work a lot and am in awe of their sheer skill.
