To turn down a good job opportunity?

I am scheduled to interview for a great role in a couple of weeks but I am in two minds about even going. There are many upsides but I wouldn't be working Mondays therefore wouldn't benefit from bank holidays. Seems minor but those long weekends are something I really look forward to! Especially when your life consists mainly of work & home.

Does anyone else not work on a Monday and how do you find it? Have you come to any kind of agreement about time off in lieu or extra pay?

Thanks

Surely if you don’t work Mondays then every weekend is a long weekend? I have to work bank holidays and Christmas 😂 honestly if that’s the only downside to an other wise great job I think it’s a silly reason to turn it down

DoneLikeAKipper · 23/05/2019 16:33

Silly question, but are you still working 5 days but Saturday/Sunday instead of Monday? I used to work Tuesday- Saturday and I actually really enjoyed it. Having a Monday off every week and being able to enjoy going places and avoiding the weekend crowd was a bliss. Plus Saturday work days always went a lot quicker due to being busy. I’d happily take those working days again myself, and lose a few bank holidays.

I worked Tue-Fri for a while. I got 80% of the pay, and 80% of the bank holidays I missed added to my annual leave allowance

ClashCityRocker · 23/05/2019 16:34

Do they not have to give you pro-rata bank holidays off?

It seems quite a small reason to turn down a good opportunity. What's the holiday allowance like? Couldn't you just tag on a day onto a few weekends to give you that long weekend feeling?

bananaontoast1 · 23/05/2019 16:35

So far I've worked every bank holiday and other holiday (Christmas etc) for an entire year.

I think you're trying to find an excuse to not go to the interview, and this is the easiest one. Are you sure it's the right role for you?

PurpleBag · 23/05/2019 16:35

I didn't work Mondays in a previous job and I had the bank holidays (pro rata) added to my annual leave, so could take them whenever.

I don't think they have to legally give you them, but worth asking.

Work full time now and don't get any of bank holidays off.............

DettolElephant · 23/05/2019 16:37

Sorry, yes it will still be 5 days. Tuesday to Saturday so still get normal holiday allowance. Just won't get bank holidays

DoneLikeAKipper- Yes I did think about that aspect of it actually. Shopping on a Monday would be amazing.

bananaontoast1- Yes, it's more or less perfect. I just really love a long weekend. Who doesn't?

Yes, I'm going to ask, definitely! Sorry you don't get any now PurpleBag

You should get extra holiday allowance instead to reflect the bank holidays. At least 4 and more if Christmas is a Monday too.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 23/05/2019 17:22

I’m not sure if it’s the same in the UK, I’m in Ireland and when I used to work Tuesday to Saturday we just got an extra day off for bank holidays. In the same week. So I might have had the Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday instead.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/05/2019 17:45

If its the perfect job why on earth are you worrying about 5 long weekends? Working every single Saturday is far more of a pain tbh. Especially if you choose to holiday in this country which invariably is Sat- Sat meaning you have to use an extra days holiday when you go away.

slashlover · 23/05/2019 18:10

BHs are normally added to your holiday entitlement. If they mean enough to you then request a holiday for those Saturdays.
