to wonder why parents take a toddler abroad on holiday

I'm currently on holiday. At the airport saw parents stressed out with toddlers. Airport shop toddlers wanting LOL dolls causing arguments, parents losing their shit. On the plane toddlers running riot - parents losing their shit. At the hotel toddlers screaming all day. Surely it's better just to leave them at home so you can enjoy a bit of peace and quiet?

OP posts:

If only my 2 year old could be trusted not to touch the oven. What a holiday I could have in between all the worrying and missing him I’d do.

PerfectPeony2 · 23/05/2019 16:15

Do you have kids OP? I’m guessing not.

EskewedBeef · 23/05/2019 16:16

For most families it's a pleasure. You only notice those who are losing their temper.

kenandbarbie · 23/05/2019 16:16

What makes you think there'd be peace and quiet at home?

AuntieMarys · 23/05/2019 16:16

Wasn't a holiday.
Same shit but with mozzies

Sagradafamiliar · 23/05/2019 16:18

I brought mine because I like being a family, family holidays and they didn't run riot or whatever else.

Happyspud · 23/05/2019 16:18

We’ve been holidaying a drive from home the last two years because Spain with 3 toddlers nearly killed us! Taking two toddlers while pregnant the previous year was mostly okay and we’ve some lovely memories but decided not to waste the money for a little while till the kids could be safer and enjoy things too without us having to be on oermenant high alert. We are leaving them all at home with their nanny while we take a week abroad ourselves this year though.

LaMarschallin · 23/05/2019 16:18

I don't think toddlers get much out of flying or being abroad so, when my children were little, we went on cottage holidays in the UK.
We didn't just push off without them though!

SoyDora · 23/05/2019 16:19

Had some lovely holidays abroad with my toddlers, even when I had two toddlers (19 month age gap). I quite enjoy their company.
Plus they’re not very good at fending for themselves, especially not for a week.

Laura221 · 23/05/2019 16:21

Because children of any age love an adventure! Even grown ups get grumpy and become arses!

NannyRed · 23/05/2019 16:21

I’m very much looking forward to my upcoming trip to Disney Paris with my daughter and grandchildren.
At one point we thought we may have to leave my son in law at home and the thought f us not being together as one big, happy family broke my heart.
I hope you don’t have and never have children. Your attitude stinks @Boozybritabroad.

Meanwhile, I’m wondering why

  1. Goady posts garner any attention.
  2. Brits abroad feel they need to drink so much?

My youngest was 2 when we first took them abroad. She was no problem, behaved on the plane and in the airport. We've since been 2 or 3 times a year and she's 5, we often get compliments on how well behaved both dc are. It wouldn't be much of a family holiday if we didn't take the whole family...

IntoValhalla · 23/05/2019 16:23

Can someone please give me details of these toddler kennel boarding facilities where I can just drop them off and go sun myself for a week?!
Do they have to share or do they get their own pen?
What about vaccination certificates?
Do I have to microchip them first?

User8888888 · 23/05/2019 16:23

I hated being on holiday with my baby but loved it when my toddler was 2. Airports are going to be horrid with kids whatever age they are. That bit isn’t really representative of the whole holiday.

Notabedofroses · 23/05/2019 16:24

Children are welcome everywhere in the world whatever their age op. It is only sad British grumps that have a problem with it. Put your ear phones in and stop whinging, you were young once.

AnneTwackie · 23/05/2019 16:25

Excellent idea OP, when can I drop mine off with you?

kaytee87 · 23/05/2019 16:26

We've had 3 lovely holidays abroad with our 2.9yo. Actually it's better than being at home as we're together (DH, ds and I) the whole time, plenty of fresh air, exercise and sunshine, meals we don't have to cook or clean up after.

Why would you not take your toddler on holiday should be the question.

Also I'd never leave my son at home for that length of time, even with a loving grandparent. I would miss him far too much and he'd be very upset.

UCOinanOCG · 23/05/2019 16:27

I loved being on holiday with mine at all ages. Granted, sometimes they acted up, but for the most part it was a lovely adventure. We didn't really do package type holidays when they were very young though, we preferred Eurocamp style holidays in France. I still don't really like package type holidays even though mine are adults now.

My DD&DSIL took DGD to Italy last year. She was 2 at the time. She was so excited to go on a plane. I packed lots of activities and snacks for her for the journey and she was apparently very well behaved on the flight. She loved the holiday and still tells me about the ‘real’ pizza and the special ice cream she had and the house she stayed in. It sounded an enjoyable time for all the family and they’re going abroad again this year with the baby in tow. I would definitely look after them if DD&DSIL wanted a holiday themselves but they enjoy seeing new places with their children which is lovely.

SoupDragon · 23/05/2019 16:28

I think your name tells me all I need to know really.

Cannyhandleit · 23/05/2019 16:29

Maybe next time book an adults only resort if it bothers you that much!

LaMarschallin · 23/05/2019 16:29

they probably don't but many parents want the much higher chance of decent weather abroad so if you can afford it that's usually the better option.

I just didn't feel it was the best option for us. However, when they were 5 and 6 we did a trial trip to Portugal. Went really well and they weren't a nuisance to us or others on the flight. So, on the strength of that 1 1/2 hour flight we went to Australia the next year and now they're really well travelled.
It does help that we're not particularly sun worshippers.

goose1964 · 23/05/2019 16:29

Mine loved going on holiday and on the whole were well behaved

themiddlestair · 23/05/2019 16:29

You are on holiday and you have taken time out of it to post that....

May I suggest it could be you who doesn't know how to enjoy a holiday...
