To be shocked #deniedmyvote

I haven't been denied my vote, but I'm shocked to hear that EU citizens in the UK have been denied a vote despite being registered and previously voting, because of a form the should have been sent, but never received.

OK, ianbu.

But it could be seen as a deliberate attempt to reduce the remainder vote in the elections which the Conservative Party (or at least the leader of the tories) wanted to avoid taking place.

@Corrine81
I doubt it very much, if they were denied is because they were not on the roll. And you don’t need ID, they have a list of all the registered people and just ticked them off when they show up

Very true - I couldn't find my polling card earlier but went along with ID just in case they needed some.
They said they didn't need any, just confirmed my name and address etc and ticked me off. I was still allowed to vote without a card.
So all a bit of bollox for some to say they're being denied the vote without a card as you CAN vote without one! If you're registered that is.

I am on holiday so applied for, and got, a postal vote. I voted in plenty of time so my vote should be counted. I do think that in 2019 the "postal" is rather antiquated. Why could they not have a system so I can vote on line? Quicker, cheaper and easier.

Ces6 · 23/05/2019 19:44

I was just a temporary guest there.
Look beyond your own nose. For plenty of people the UK is their home. I have lived, worked and paid tax for decades in a country where I wasn't born. Why shouldn't I have a voice? Interestingly it is often the same people who complain that immigrants don't integrate who think they shouldn't have a vote. Surely we should encourage people to participate in the political life of a country, not exclude them?

The whole system is a fucking antiquated shambles. Considering that for General elections were are voting for braying tossers to sit in a museum with a load of arcane and antiquated rules talking in the silliest manner imaginable it's symptomatic.

Time for a massive overhaul of this entire shitshow.

woman19 · 24/05/2019 15:10

This was for EU election not a domestic general election.
We are still in the EU.
EU citizens were cheated of their votes.

piffpaffpoff · 24/05/2019 15:11

It’s much more likely incompetence than conspiracy. I’d like to know, how many people it affected and how many of them had filled in the correct papers to get on the voters register. I’ve worked in a polling station (not yesterday) and had uk citizens not on the register because they’ve not put in a change of address for example. Their fault, no-one else’s. I’m not blaming anyone who didn’t get a vote, just saying there are a few reasons why incompetency is much more likely than a cunning conspiracy. But of course, that’s a boring answer that doesn’t make headlines or fit with certain people’s narrative...

woman19 · 24/05/2019 15:15

Whether it's deliberate or not, it's illegal.

EU and the domestic courts will be pursuing it.

I wonder which other western countries habituallly deprive 1-2million of their electorate of their votes?

SilentSister · 24/05/2019 15:22

We live in another EU country and completed all the necessary registration documents for postal voting

Why are you not voting in the country in which you are living?

Deathraystare · 24/05/2019 15:34

I think it is part deliberate and part incompetence.

True! Not sure which is worse. About equal I would say!!!!

woman19 · 24/05/2019 15:57

If a government accidentally or deliberately takes away 1-2m citizens' votes, what might they do next, accidentally or deliberately?

Their votes should be provided immediately and added to the Sunday evening results, or the election re run.

TheHoundsofLove · 24/05/2019 16:00

Why are you not voting in the country in which you are living?

Because I'm a British citizen and wanted my voice heard in what is set to be Britain's last EU election.

piffpaffpoff · 24/05/2019 17:52

What is the source of the “1-2million” figure please Woman19?

woman19 · 24/05/2019 19:47

What is the source of the “1-2million” figure please Woman19

OK. First, how about you show me a source which confirms all EU Irish/ British entitled and registered to do so voted yesterday/ Smile

piffpaffpoff · 24/05/2019 21:24

I’m not sure what you mean? I’m not making any claims about anything, nor do I want to. You said the govt took away 1-2 million votes - I’m simply asking where that figure came from?

woman19 · 24/05/2019 21:27

I said:
If a government accidentally or deliberately takes away 1-2m citizens' votes, what might they do next, accidentally or deliberately
'If'
Can you show me a source which confirms all EU Irish/ British entitled and registered to do so voted yesterday. Smile

piffpaffpoff · 24/05/2019 21:31

Don’t understand the point you’re failing to make so let’s just leave it there.

Sorry, my last sentence in last post wasn't clear. Mea culpa.

I've posted copious evidence on this thread, and there's loads available elsewhere that up to 75% of the 3m at least in these islands have been barred from their rightful vote in this election.

Have you evidence that all our EU Irish/British/Britain in EU who were eligible to vote yesterday, were 'allowed' to do so?

It would be great news if you have it!

Jon65 · 24/05/2019 21:59

Vwhdc cocked up our postal vote in that the documents reached my husband and i in the eu, too late to vote. If I can order a dress from the uk and it gets to me in 24 hours, why can't my country get a voting paper to me in time that I can vote. It took 12 days to reach me. That is crap in 2019.

PBobs · 24/05/2019 22:13

Yep. We live overseas. Never had a ballot arrive in time to vote. It's a fix. They could use an online system if they really wanted us to vote. I'm so fed up of it.

piffpaffpoff · 24/05/2019 22:28

But I didn’t claim anywhere that I knew that everyone who had the right to vote was allowed to, so I’ve no idea why you keep asking me to prove something I never claimed in the first place. You’re just trying to deflect away from not answering my question!

woman19 · 28/05/2019 11:18

Anyone else who affected by #deniedmyvote.
Phone on now on LBC right now on this.
Presenter is quoting up to 2million votes suppressed. Shock
Ballot papers sent by private company, not Royal Mail, and via Netherlands. Shock

Yes. And workable, as they have such a system in Estonia.

fairweathercyclist · 28/05/2019 12:55

I have anecdotal evidence that (some) British citizens were denied a vote in Austria. This came from someone I follow on Twitter who is not prone to tweeting hypobole - she said her British brother who lives in Austria was unable to vote.

timeforakinderworld · 28/05/2019 16:29

I voted in Italy no problem. One of the reasons I chose to vote in Italy is that postal votes rarely arrive in time. It's a problem that has been going on for years.
